You can remove silent pauses from an existing YouTube Live replay in YouTube Studio on a computer: open the replay under Content, choose Editor → Trim & cut, and use New cut for a gap in the middle. Back up the video before saving: as of June 2025, YouTube says Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone with the former “Revert to original” feature.
Before editing: check that the replay exists and make a backup
Open YouTube Studio and confirm the broadcast appears as a video under Content. A live stream does not always produce a replay: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive of live streams. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Download a copy of the replay or use Google Takeout before editing if you may need the original later. YouTube’s current guidance says that, as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone using the former “Revert to original” feature. Treat the save as a consequential edit, not a reversible preview. YouTube Help: Trim your videos YouTube Help: Download YouTube videos
Remove silence from the beginning or end
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content from the left menu.
- Open the live replay you want to edit, then choose Editor.
- Select Trim & cut. Adjust the blue selection handles so the retained section starts after the opening dead air or ends before the closing dead air.
- Preview the result. Save only after confirming that the kept footage begins and ends where you intend.
Remove a pause in the middle of the replay
- In the replay’s Editor, select Trim & cut.
- Choose New cut. Position the red selection box over the silent section or setup pause to remove.
- Use the start and end time fields if you need precise boundaries. Check that the cut does not remove speech, music, or a transition you want to keep.
- Preview the edit, then save when the result is correct.
YouTube’s Editor can cut material from the beginning, middle, or end of a qualifying video on a computer. Trimming keeps the existing video URL, views, and comments; it does not create a separate upload. YouTube Help: Trim your videos

Know the limits before you rely on Studio Editor
- Duration: YouTube documents the trim feature for videos shorter than six hours. If the replay is six hours or longer, the documented trim workflow may not be available.
- Views and monetization status: For an unedited video with more than 100,000 views, a channel outside the YouTube Partner Program may be unable to save changes, with face blurring as the stated exception.
- Replay availability: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay. Check for the video in Studio before planning an edit; keep a local archive for future broadcasts.
- Backup: The former revert-to-original option is no longer available for Studio Editor changes as of June 2025, according to YouTube.
Choose the right tool for the outcome
| What you want | Use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Remove dead air from the existing replay | Editor → Trim & cut; choose New cut for an internal gap | Edits the existing replay while keeping its URL, views, and comments, if the video qualifies and the edit can be saved. |
| Publish a shorter selection from the stream | Highlights | Creates a shorter highlight from a stream, including after it has ended; it is not the way to remove a pause from the original replay. |
| Share a portion separately | Clips or Shorts | Extracts selected portions as separate content rather than cleaning up the original replay. |
| Editor is unavailable or the replay exceeds the documented trim duration | Download a copy, edit it outside YouTube, then upload the result as a new video | A new upload has a new URL; YouTube does not let you replace an existing video in place. |

Troubleshooting common editing problems
- The replay is missing from Content: Confirm the broadcast ended and allow for processing. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so check whether a local recording exists.
- Trim & cut is unavailable: Check the replay’s duration. YouTube documents trimming for videos shorter than six hours; an external edit and new upload may be needed if the replay is too long.
- The edit will not save: If the video is unedited, has more than 100,000 views, and the channel is outside the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube says saving may be restricted, except for face blurring.
- The preview removes too much or too little: Reposition the handles or cut boundaries, enter exact timestamps if useful, and preview again before saving. Because the former revert option is no longer available, do not save until the selection is right.
- You need the original after saving: Restore from the backup you made before editing. YouTube’s former “Revert to original” feature cannot undo Studio Editor changes as of June 2025.
