What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single conversion command that fixes every YouTube Live “format” rejection. First check whether the stream is configured for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS: they require different output. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio. For HLS, YouTube requires a rolling playlist of MPEG-TS segments delivered over HTTPS. Re-encoding changes codecs; repackaging changes how media is wrapped or segmented. Choose the fix that matches the error and ingest protocol.
Identify what “playlist files” means in your setup
A playlist may be an HLS .m3u8 file that references media segments, or a text list that FFmpeg reads as an input. The title alone does not identify which one you have or explain YouTube’s rejection. Before changing files, collect the exact error, your complete FFmpeg command, the first lines of the playlist, the input media’s codecs and container, and the protocol selected for the YouTube stream. Remove stream keys, private URLs, and other credentials before sharing them.

- If the stream uses RTMP or RTMPS: verify the encoded video and audio against YouTube’s encoder requirements. A playlist or container change will not turn an unsupported codec into H.264.
- If the stream uses HLS: verify the playlist and segment format, duration, rolling window, and HTTP upload method against YouTube’s HLS requirements.
The protocol is set in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the protocol and ingestion details provided for that stream; do not substitute an example endpoint from documentation.

| Setting | RTMP/RTMPS | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Video and audio | H.264 video; AAC or MP3 audio, according to YouTube’s encoder settings table (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings). | YouTube lists H.264 and HEVC video, and AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio for HLS (YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream). |
| Packaging | Send a compatible encoded stream to the RTMP/RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for the broadcast. | Use MPEG-TS segments and a rolling HLS playlist; byte-range mode is not allowed. |
| Timing and delivery | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. | Segments must be one to four seconds long. Deliver by HTTPS POST or PUT, with no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. |
| Latency consideration | Use the latency option available for the selected RTMP/RTMPS setup. | HLS has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream; YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is disabled when HLS is selected (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings). |
Fix an RTMP or RTMPS format rejection
Check the encoded streams, not just the filename
Inspect the media or FFmpeg input to determine its actual video and audio codecs. An .mp4 extension does not guarantee H.264 video or compatible audio, and changing an extension does not convert either codec. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS table calls for H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. See the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Decide whether to re-encode or stream-copy
Use stream copy only when the source streams already meet the requirements and the issue is compatible with remuxing or the output path. Stream copy preserves the existing encoded video and audio; it does not convert an unsupported codec or change encoded properties. If the input video or audio is incompatible, re-encode the incompatible stream to a supported codec. A container-only conversion is not a codec conversion.
Do not choose a bitrate from a universal rule of thumb. YouTube’s recommended values vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. For reference, the YouTube Help table accessed on October 3, 2026 lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those are figures for that specific resolution, frame rate, and codec—not a diagnosis of an individual format error. Consult the table for other combinations.

Fix an HLS playlist or segment rejection
Meet YouTube’s HLS packaging requirements
For an HLS ingest, configure FFmpeg to produce an HLS output that meets the requirements in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Use MPEG-TS (
.ts) segments. YouTube states: “Segment Format: must be TS (Transport Stream).” - Set segment duration to between one and four seconds.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Do not use byte-range mode.
- Send the playlist and segments to the HTTPS HLS ingestion URL supplied for the stream using POST or PUT.
The URL and credentials for an actual broadcast must come from YouTube Live Control Room. A sample URL in FFmpeg documentation is illustrative, not a YouTube destination.

Configure FFmpeg’s HLS upload method
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can write playlist and segment files and upload them over HTTP. Its documented method option supports selecting a method such as PUT, and its example updates the playlist as segments are uploaded. The receiving server must accept the selected method. Confirm the method YouTube requires for the specific HLS ingestion setup and use the real URL from Live Control Room; do not assume an arbitrary HTTP server or endpoint will accept FFmpeg’s request. See the FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation.
Do not use HLS conversion as an RTMP fix
HLS output is not a universal workaround for an RTMP/RTMPS codec rejection. HLS has its own protocol, segment, playlist, and delivery rules, and generally introduces more latency than continuous RTMP. Use the protocol selected for the broadcast, unless you deliberately create a new stream configured for the other protocol.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom or check | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
Changing .mp4 to another extension does not help. |
The codec or encoded properties may be incompatible; a filename change does not alter them. | Identify the actual codecs. Re-encode incompatible streams, or use stream copy only if the encoded streams already meet the selected protocol’s requirements. |
| The input playlist will not open or FFmpeg reports parsing or input errors. | Playlist syntax, referenced file paths, or access to referenced media. | Check whether the input is an HLS .m3u8 or a text list for another FFmpeg input mode. Inspect its first lines and confirm referenced files or URLs are reachable. |
| YouTube rejects the HLS stream or segments. | Segment format, duration, playlist window, byte-range mode, upload method, or HLS ingest URL. | Check for TS segments of one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, and HTTPS POST/PUT to the actual YouTube-provided URL. |
| FFmpeg cannot upload the HLS output. | The endpoint may not accept the chosen HTTP method, or the URL may not be the HLS URL for this broadcast. | Verify the ingestion URL and required method in Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s documented method option does not make every endpoint compatible. |
| The stream starts but has more delay than expected. | HLS latency characteristics or the selected latency mode. | Check whether HLS is necessary for the workflow. YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is unavailable when HLS is selected. |
| The format warning remains despite a bitrate adjustment. | Codec or packaging incompatibility rather than bitrate alone. | Confirm protocol, codec, container or segment format, and exact error before changing bitrate. Use YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific table. |
Copyright and reused-content checks for prerecorded playlists
A technically valid stream is not automatically eligible for monetization or free of copyright claims. Before broadcasting a playlist, confirm you have rights to the video, music, and other included material. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization review is separate from whether FFmpeg can encode or deliver a stream. Review each item rather than assuming that a file’s availability online gives permission to rebroadcast it. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube, rather than debug a custom FFmpeg HLS feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Read more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
