These address different failures: a supervisor can relaunch a dead process, while FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from certain output interruptions when the process is still running. Neither guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast or proves that audio and video are healthy.
Know which failure you are trying to catch
- FFmpeg exits: a process supervisor can start it again after a failure.
- FFmpeg stays running but output is interrupted: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from certain output errors. This does not replace process supervision.
- The process and output appear active, but the stream is unhealthy: check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages, and inspect the viewer-facing audio and video. A running process alone is not proof of a working stream.
YouTube advises creators to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. The official YouTube Help page does not establish that an external FFmpeg restart preserves one continuous broadcast or archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archival guidance is not a guarantee about what happens across an encoder restart. Set up automatic restart with systemd
On a Linux host using systemd, run the FFmpeg command from a service. This example is a pattern to adapt, not a tested, copy-and-paste service file. Put your actual command in a wrapper script at the shown path, or replace the path with an appropriate executable and arguments.

WantedBy=multi-user.target- Create the wrapper script with the FFmpeg command you have tested for your input, installed FFmpeg build, codecs, and YouTube ingest settings. Restrict access to the script and any secret files it uses.
- Save the service as a systemd unit, for example
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. Check your system’s systemd documentation and version for exact behavior and service-management procedures. - Reload systemd’s unit configuration, enable the unit if you want it to start at boot, and start it. For example:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload,sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Inspect the service state and logs with
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceandjournalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service. Confirm both that FFmpeg is running and that YouTube reports a healthy stream.
Restart=on-failure and RestartSec=5 are example policy choices: restart after failure with a short delay. A deliberate stop should remain a stop. Avoid an unconditional shell loop that makes operator shutdown difficult. See the systemd service documentation for restart behavior and your local version’s details.

Use FFmpeg output recovery for a different problem
If FFmpeg remains alive but its output encounters a temporary failure, the FIFO muxer offers recovery options. This adapts the structure of FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example; replace placeholders and verify option support against your installed build.

'rtmp://SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY'- Use the endpoint and protocol configured by YouTube, and select mappings, codecs, and input options appropriate to your source.
-attempt_recoveryconcerns output recovery. It cannot restart a process that has terminated and cannot guarantee recovery from permanent errors, a YouTube-side rejection, or a configuration mistake.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1can trade continuity for missing media if the queue fills.- The
-reoption is shown in FFmpeg’s RTMP example for processing a file at real-time rate. Do not assume it is suitable for every live-capture input.
Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation. Use the protocol YouTube has configured for your stream.

Configure the encoder for the connection and output
Before relying on restart or recovery, match the encoder settings to the stream you intend to send and the connection available at the host. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP and RTMPS; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC and MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube table for your chosen combination rather than treating one bitrate as universal. - Choose protocol, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and target bitrate together; confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the choices.
- Use the two-second keyframe interval YouTube recommends, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If primary and backup encoders are active, account for their combined bitrate plus the additional margin. A network disruption can break a stream. YouTube network guidance for live streaming.
- Test the exact command, ingest configuration, and connection before the event. A successful test does not eliminate the need to watch stream health while live.
Monitor the stream at four layers
Process
Check whether systemd considers the service active, whether it has restarted, and what FFmpeg reported immediately before an exit. Service logs help distinguish a process failure from an output problem.

FFmpeg output
If the process is still running but YouTube is not receiving a healthy stream, inspect FFmpeg’s output and logs and determine whether FIFO recovery is being attempted. Recovery cannot resolve every permanent connection, server, or configuration error.
YouTube and the viewer’s experience
In Live Control Room, review stream-health status and messages. Also check the actual stream’s audio and video; platform indicators and a running encoder do not substitute for checking what viewers receive. YouTube advises continuous quality monitoring. YouTube encoder settings and stream health.

Network and credentials
Verify outbound capacity and the recommended bandwidth margin. If the encoder cannot start, check that it is using the intended YouTube ingest configuration and current stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as being like the stream’s password and address: keep the key private, and reset it if compromised. Retrieve or manage it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder securely. YouTube stream-key guidance.
