A pinned chat message is an in-chat signpost viewers can see while using the current stream’s chat. If your 24/7 stream never ends, YouTube’s documented Live Redirect trigger has not occurred; a pinned message can point chat users somewhere, but it does not automatically move them.
What each feature does
Live Redirect: a handoff after a broadcast ends
You configure Live Redirect in YouTube Studio on the originating live stream or Premiere, under Customization → Redirect. You can add a Premiere or select another channel’s live stream as the destination. YouTube says viewers are moved to that destination after the originating stream or Premiere ends. The receiving channel must allow the redirect. YouTube Help: How to use YouTube Live Redirect

This makes Redirect useful for a planned transition—for example, ending one broadcast and sending viewers to a scheduled Premiere. It is not documented as an always-on routing feature that activates while the original stream continues.
Pinned chat message: an instruction inside the current chat
A creator can pin their own message or a viewer’s message in a live stream or Premiere chat. Only one message can be pinned at a time, and only the creator—not moderators or viewers—can pin, replace, or unpin it. A pinned message is visible in chat; it does not launch or redirect viewers to another broadcast. YouTube Help: Use live chat during your live stream or Premiere

Which fits your 24/7 channel?
| Goal | Better documented fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Keep an instruction or destination visible to people in the current stream’s chat | Pinned chat message | One message can be pinned; the creator manages it. It is a signpost, not a handoff. |
| Move viewers when the current stream or Premiere ends | Live Redirect | The handoff follows the end of the originating broadcast and depends on sender eligibility and destination permissions. |
| Move viewers while the 24/7 broadcast remains continuously live | No automatic method established by YouTube’s cited guidance | A pinned message can direct chat users, but Live Redirect’s documented end-of-stream trigger has not happened. |
| Deal with encoder reconnects or broadcast-session transitions | Verify on the channel | YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify whether either feature persists or retriggers in these cases. |
YouTube’s live-stream guidance explains live chat in the context of live streams and Premieres, but does not establish additional pin or redirect behavior for 24/7 transitions. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams
Set up a Live Redirect for an end-of-stream handoff
- Check sending eligibility. YouTube Help says the channel sending a redirect needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Check the current eligibility and Studio controls before scheduling a handoff; settings can change. YouTube Help: How to use YouTube Live Redirect
- Confirm the destination permits redirects. The destination channel controls who can redirect to it. YouTube documents allowing channels the creator subscribes to, allowing all channels, or allowing specific channels. The all-channels option cannot be combined with the other listed permission approaches. The manual allowlist supports up to 100 channels, according to the current Help page.
- Choose the destination in the sending stream’s settings. In YouTube Studio, open the originating live stream or Premiere, then go to Customization → Redirect. Add a Premiere or select another channel’s live stream as the destination.
- Tell viewers what will happen. The handoff is tied to the end of the originating stream or Premiere. Viewers with autoplay disabled may need to click the play button to start the destination. This autoplay detail is described in TeamYouTube’s May 3, 2022 announcement; use current Help guidance for present setup and eligibility. TeamYouTube announcement, May 3, 2022
YouTube’s 2022 announcement says channels of any size can receive redirects. That is separate from the current Help page’s requirement for a channel sending a redirect.

Pin a message for viewers in the current chat
- Open the live chat for the stream or Premiere.
- Choose the message you want viewers to see. You can pin a message you wrote or a viewer’s message.
- Pin it as the creator. Only the creator can pin, replace, or unpin a message. If another message is already pinned, pinning a new one replaces it.
- Keep the wording actionable. State the destination or instruction clearly. A pin can direct people using chat, but it does not move them automatically.
What YouTube’s guidance does not settle for 24/7 streams
The cited YouTube pages do not say whether a pinned message survives an encoder disconnect, whether a session transition counts as ending the stream for Redirect, or whether a redirect automatically restarts or retriggers after a transition. If your channel depends on a particular reconnect or session behavior, verify it on that channel before relying on it. There is also no published comparative performance figure in these sources showing that pins or redirects produce more clicks or retain more viewers.
