You can still let the display turn off: screen timeout and computer sleep are separate settings. If YouTube playback stops while the computer stays awake, check the player’s Sleep Timer. For a broadcast sent by encoder software on that computer, keep the host computer awake and connected.
First identify what is stopping
“YouTube Live stream” can mean watching a live stream or playlist in a browser, or sending a live broadcast from an encoder on your computer. The fixes differ:

- Watching: check whether the computer sleeps, then check YouTube’s Sleep Timer.
- Broadcasting with encoder software: the computer running the encoder must stay active to send its feed to YouTube. This follows from YouTube’s documented encoder workflow; YouTube’s help pages do not state a sleep rule for every encoder.
Note whether the display merely goes dark or the computer actually sleeps. A black screen alone does not mean the computer has stopped working.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents this path in its Windows 11 power settings guidance.
- Under the power condition you will use, change Make my device sleep after to a longer interval or Never for the session.
- If you want the display to turn off, set Turn my screen off after independently. You can let the screen go dark while leaving the computer awake.
- Check both the on-battery and plugged-in values if you may switch power conditions. Laptop options can vary by hardware and system policy.
Battery Saver and network behavior during sleep are separate considerations. Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance covers battery-saving features and network behavior. For a session that must continue, prevent sleep rather than relying on network access while the computer is asleep.

Keep a Mac awake
- On a Mac laptop, open System Settings > Battery and inspect the options for the power state you are using.
- When connected to a power adapter, enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off if that option is available. You can then let the display turn off without the Mac automatically sleeping.
- On a desktop Mac, look in Energy settings for the relevant sleep and wake controls.
Labels and available controls differ by Mac model and macOS version. Apple notes that preventing or delaying sleep can increase power consumption; its instructions are in Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac. For a long session, use this setup while plugged in and restore your usual sleep behavior afterward if appropriate.
Check YouTube’s Sleep Timer
If the computer remains awake but a video pauses after a set period, inspect the player timer. In the desktop player, open the video, select Settings > Sleep Timer, then change or disable the timer. YouTube says this setting automatically pauses playback after the chosen duration. It is separate from computer sleep and does not control a creator’s outgoing encoder feed. If you are broadcasting with encoder software
YouTube supports streaming by mobile, webcam, or encoder. An encoder may be software running on the computer or standalone hardware; YouTube’s setup uses a stream URL and key to connect the encoder to the live stream. If that software runs on the computer that sleeps, keep the computer awake and its network connection active for the broadcast. Review YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live streaming tips, including its advice to monitor the stream.

If viewers on different connections report the same broadcast issue, YouTube advises checking the encoder and outbound connection. Do not assume a single viewer’s playback problem proves the broadcast itself has failed.

What to check if it still stops
- Check the sleep state: confirm the computer is awake after the display turns off, and verify the sleep timeout for the active power condition.
- Check the timer: if only YouTube playback pauses while the computer is awake, inspect Sleep Timer in the player settings.
- Check the right side of the stream: for a viewer, distinguish browser playback from the creator’s broadcast. For a creator, monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health.
- Investigate other causes separately: if the computer is plugged in and awake and no player timer is responsible, check browser, network, or service-specific issues. The platform instructions cited here do not establish those causes.
