Does YouTube Live automatically stop after 12 hours?
YouTube’s current help guidance does not establish a universal maximum duration for an always-on broadcast or say that streams automatically end at 12 hours. The 12-hour figure refers to what may happen to the stream’s recording and rewind features, which are separate from whether the live broadcast continues.

Will YouTube save a livestream longer than 12 hours?
It might, but you should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy of a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. YouTube’s wording is conditional: the stream may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance also says 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams are automatically archived, but that does not override the over-12-hour warning.
The under-12-hour archive guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. Choosing one of those methods—or streaming in 4K—does not remove the stated archive risk for a stream that exceeds 12 hours. YouTube: Archive live streams

How to protect a recording of a long broadcast
If you need the complete program afterward, keep a local recording as a separate backup rather than depending solely on YouTube’s archive. YouTube’s streaming tips advise checking the local archive’s integrity and confirming that the file size is growing. YouTube: Live streaming tips
- Before going live, set up a local recording using your streaming method and confirm that the destination has enough available storage for the planned duration.
- Once recording starts, verify that the file exists and its size is increasing. A recording indicator alone is not enough if the file is not being written correctly.
- During the broadcast, check recording health periodically, especially if the stream runs unattended for long periods.
- Afterward, confirm that the file opens and plays before treating it as a reliable backup. An external drive is an optional storage choice, not a YouTube requirement.
YouTube does not prescribe a particular local recording application, drive, or storage capacity in the cited guidance. Estimate space from your own recording settings and test the workflow before relying on it for an important event.

Does the streaming method change the 12-hour guidance?
YouTube documents live streaming from a mobile device, webcam, or encoder. Its archive guidance covers those methods, and the reviewed pages do not say that a particular method changes the archive or DVR cautions. An encoder may suit productions that need gameplay capture, overlays, or other higher-production elements; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher production value. What to plan for when a stream crosses 12 hours
- Do not interpret the archive warning as a documented automatic broadcast cutoff.
- Expect that YouTube may not capture the full stream as an archive and that viewers may have limited or no DVR rewind.
- Make and verify a local recording if preserving the complete broadcast matters.
- Do not assume that stopping and restarting every 12 hours guarantees a particular archive result; YouTube’s cited pages do not document or promise that procedure.
Rights still apply to always-on content
A continuous stream does not exempt its content from YouTube’s rules. YouTube’s livestream terms require appropriate rights for live content and compliance with applicable laws.
