The NAS can store the video without running FFmpeg itself. The loop repeats the media; it does not guarantee that FFmpeg, your internet connection, or the YouTube event will stay live indefinitely.
Choose where FFmpeg will run
There are two common ways to use a NAS as the source. Which one works best depends on the NAS operating system, available FFmpeg build, CPU capacity, network path, and ability to keep a process running. The exact NAS model and OS matter; there is no universal installation command or interface.

If FFmpeg runs on another computer, the NAS is storage, not the encoder. If it runs on the NAS, both jobs share the NAS’s resources. Without a model and OS, compatibility, installation steps, and restart configuration cannot be specified safely.

Prepare the video and YouTube stream
Make the source path available
Confirm that the process running FFmpeg can read the video. For a mounted NAS share, use the path as seen by that process—not necessarily the path shown in a desktop file browser. For FFmpeg running on the NAS, use the file’s path on that system. Check that the account running FFmpeg has permission to read the file and that the share remains connected for the duration of the stream.

Get the ingest details in Live Control Room
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the server URL and stream key for your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS; to reveal its RTMPS URL, select the lock icon in the Stream settings URL field. Use the actual values YouTube displays rather than a guessed endpoint.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or leave it in a shared command, log, or shell history. If someone else gets the key, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.
Loop the file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 loops indefinitely and 0 disables looping. -re reads file input at its native frame rate and can pace input when sending a file as a live stream. Put these options before the relevant -i.

-f flv "[YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL]/[stream key]"This is a command shape, not a copy-and-run encoder profile. Replace the path and bracketed portions with values appropriate to your source and YouTube settings. Do not put a real key in a command that could be exposed through shell history, process listings, logs, or a public example. Consult the documentation or help for the FFmpeg version installed on your system; online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly and may not match an older NAS package.
Set output codecs and bitrate for the stream
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not treat a single bitrate as suitable for every stream.
For one specific reference point, YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the format you intend to send, then choose a rate your upload connection can sustain.

The command’s mapping and encoding options depend on the video’s streams and the output format you choose. Verify that the output video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval are supported by YouTube’s current guidance. A NAS share that is fast enough to read a file does not by itself establish that the NAS CPU can encode it or that the internet uplink can carry the resulting stream reliably.

- Start FFmpeg with the source path, encoding options, and YouTube ingest details configured.
- Open Live Control Room and wait for the encoder preview to appear. Use the event controls to go live when the workflow requires it.
- Check the preview for both picture and sound, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while the feed is running.
- To end the broadcast, stop FFmpeg from sending the feed and end the stream in Live Control Room.
Before relying on the setup, test with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. Confirm that FFmpeg can continue reading the NAS path and that the available upload connection sustains the chosen bitrate. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Keep a long-running stream reliable
An infinite media loop only repeats the input. It does not keep the FFmpeg process alive after a failure, restore a lost NAS mount, repair an interrupted internet connection, restart a YouTube event, or guarantee an uninterrupted archive. Long-running operation also depends on process supervision and recovery procedures appropriate to the particular NAS or host.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. Do not infer from that that an infinite FFmpeg loop will produce an indefinitely running or archived broadcast.

Does FFmpeg have to run on the NAS?
No. A separate computer can run FFmpeg and read the video from a mounted NAS share; the NAS itself only needs to provide the file.

What does -stream_loop -1 do?
It tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It does not guarantee that the encoder, connection, or YouTube event will stay active.
Can I use this setup for a 24/7 broadcast?
The loop option repeats media, but uninterrupted 24/7 operation depends on the host, NAS path, network, process recovery, and YouTube event. The loop alone is not a guarantee.
