If motion in your YouTube Live stream looks blocky, first check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. Then compare your encoder’s bitrate with YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrate for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Raise bitrate only if your upload connection can sustain it reliably; otherwise, lower the resolution or frame rate and use the recommendation for that mode.
What to check first
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health. Read the messages and their timestamps. YouTube classifies yellow errors as possible causes of degraded quality and red errors as critical issues that can prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems. Follow the specific message rather than assuming blocky motion has only one cause. YouTube’s live streaming error guide explains the error categories.
- Confirm the incoming video mode. Check the resolution and frame rate selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings and make sure the encoder is sending matching dimensions and frame rate. A mismatch can trigger an error even if the bitrate seems appropriate.
- Check the codec and actual video bitrate. Compare the encoder’s configured video bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate—not the recommendations for uploading a finished video.
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and assess whether the connection can reliably carry the chosen stream bitrate. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained capacity during the broadcast, so leave room for connection variation.
- Check rate control and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. Also use progressive scan: YouTube says interlaced video is unsupported and can cause artifacts.
- Test with representative movement. Before the event, test audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream, then monitor health and messages during the test. A static screen may not reveal motion-related problems.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing stream quality that your available internet connection can support and lowering the chosen resolution when bandwidth is insufficient. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Recommended YouTube Live ingest bitrates
The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended video bitrates for live ingest, current when checked on October 3, 2026. They depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not guarantees of artifact-free motion. AV1 and H.265 share the recommendations shown in YouTube’s table.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Ingest mode | AV1 / H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
YouTube also lists minimums, which are not the recommended targets: for H.264, 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 720p60, 5 Mbps at 1080p30, and 6 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1/H.265, 2 Mbps at 720p30 and 720p60, and 4 Mbps at 1080p30 and 1080p60. The table above is for live ingest; consult YouTube’s guidance for other modes, such as 1440p, rather than extrapolating a minimum.

Should you raise bitrate or lower resolution?
Raise bitrate when it is below the recommendation and the connection is stable
Fast movement can require more bits to preserve detail, so a bitrate below YouTube’s recommendation for your mode is a reasonable setting to correct—provided the upload connection can sustain the higher rate. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p60. Those are mode-specific recommendations, not a universal fix for blocky motion.
Lower resolution or frame rate when the connection cannot reliably carry the target
If your upload cannot sustain the recommended bitrate for the selected mode, choose a lower resolution or frame rate that it can handle reliably, then set the bitrate according to YouTube’s recommendation for the new mode and codec. A reliably delivered lower-resolution stream can be a better choice than a higher-resolution stream that drops or degrades.

If bitrate already matches, investigate other causes
Do not keep increasing bitrate without evidence. Check for a resolution or frame-rate mismatch, incorrect keyframe cadence, interlaced input, or a relevant stream-health error. YouTube lists these as separate troubleshooting checks. The symptom alone does not establish which one is responsible.
Encoder settings and viewer playback
YouTube’s published live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Keep the encoder’s resolution and frame rate aligned with the stream configuration in Live Control Room.

YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. If stream health is good but one viewer still sees blockiness, the appearance may not be explained by the incoming encoder settings alone; check playback on another device or connection before changing a working ingest configuration. This is a diagnostic possibility, not a confirmed explanation for any individual viewer’s issue.

| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Blocky motion and bitrate below YouTube’s recommendation | Codec, ingest resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity | Raise bitrate to the recommendation only if the connection can reliably sustain it; otherwise choose a lower mode. |
| Quality degrades or health messages indicate a bandwidth issue | Whether the upload can sustain the chosen mode | Lower resolution or frame rate and set the bitrate for that mode. |
| A resolution or frame-rate error appears | Encoder output versus the stream’s Ingestion Settings | Make the encoder’s dimensions and frame rate match the selected configuration. |
| Buffering or a keyframe warning appears | Keyframe interval and GOP settings | Use a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds, and check the encoder’s GOP configuration. |
| Artifacts persist despite a suitable bitrate | Progressive versus interlaced input and other timestamped health messages | Use progressive scan and resolve the specific error reported by YouTube. |
| Only some viewers report blockiness | Stream health and playback on another device or connection | Check whether the issue is limited to a particular playback environment before changing the incoming stream. |
