These are encoder targets, not proof that an internet plan advertising the same upload speed can sustain a continuous stream. Leave headroom for audio and other network traffic, test with representative content, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
Recommended 480p settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives these 480p recommendations for 30 fps; the table does not establish a 480p60 bitrate recommendation. [YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]

| Setting | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 480p at 30 fps |
| Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 3 Mbps |
| Video bitrate, H.264 | 4 Mbps |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 kbps in YouTube’s advanced settings; this is separate from video bitrate |
| Protocol and audio formats | RTMP/RTMPS; AAC or MP3 audio |
YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 and lists live encoding up to 60 fps, but the bitrate figures above specifically concern 480p30. [YouTube Help]

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow much upload speed do you need?
The recommended video bitrate is the amount your encoder sends for video, not the total upload speed your connection should be expected to deliver reliably. Add audio bitrate and allow capacity for network overhead and other devices or applications using the connection. A speed test is a useful check, but a single result cannot establish that upload capacity will remain stable for an entire stream.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
YouTube recommends running an upload speed test, testing with similar motion and audio, and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. [YouTube Help]
Use OBS’s 75% rule only as a starting heuristic
OBS suggests starting with a bitrate around 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting. That is an OBS heuristic—not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee. OBS also cautions that the usable bitrate depends on stable upload capacity and the streaming service’s limits. If the connection fluctuates, even a speed test result comfortably above the configured bitrate may not prevent dropped frames. [OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting]

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Set up and test the stream
- Choose 480p30 and the codec. In your encoder, select 480p at 30 fps. Use the bitrate recommendation corresponding to the codec: 4 Mbps for H.264, or 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above 4 seconds, in line with YouTube’s guidance. [YouTube Help]
- Configure audio separately. YouTube’s advanced settings list 128 kbps for stereo. Include audio and other network use when assessing whether your upload can sustain the stream.
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test as YouTube recommends. Consider whether other people, devices, backups, or uploads will use the connection while streaming.
- Run a representative test stream. Test with the same kind of movement and audio you expect in the actual broadcast. Static slides or a quiet scene may not reveal issues that appear with more motion or sound.
- Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test and live broadcast. If using OBS, rising dropped frames point to a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. [OBS Project]
YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default; manual selection is available through custom stream-key settings. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, so the bitrate you send to YouTube is not necessarily the bitrate each viewer receives. Lower-latency settings can also mean more playback buffering. [YouTube Help] [YouTube Help: Live streaming latency]

Troubleshoot an unstable 480p stream
- Dropped frames are increasing: In OBS, this indicates an unstable connection or that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Recheck upload stability, reduce competing network traffic, and retest before lowering the encoder bitrate. OBS’s 75% starting heuristic can help frame the test, but is not a guarantee. [OBS Project]
- A speed test looks adequate, but the stream still struggles: A test measures performance at one moment. Repeat the test and run a stream test with representative movement and audio; monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. [YouTube Help]
- Viewers report buffering: Do not assume the encoder bitrate is the playback bitrate for every viewer: YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple viewer formats. YouTube also notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. [YouTube Help] [YouTube Help]
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video, StreamNeo can keep it running without leaving a computer or home connection on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
