YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. A low-end PC is not a reason to lengthen it: reduce the encoder workload by choosing a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the computer and your upload connection can sustain.
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Find the streaming encoder settings. If the keyframe control is not shown, change Output Mode to Advanced and check the streaming settings again.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 if the field is measured in seconds. Labels and available controls can vary by OBS version and selected encoder.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its live-streaming error guidance explains that at 30 fps, a 2-second interval is every 60 frames. At 60 fps, the same calculation gives 120 frames.

If your encoder requests a number of frames rather than seconds, calculate it as frame rate × 2: for example, use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Do not confuse the 4-second maximum with the recommended setting; use 2 seconds unless a specific compatible workflow requires otherwise.

What the setting does—and why the PC does not change it
Keyframes are part of the video stream’s encoding structure. YouTube’s interval guidance concerns what the receiving platform expects, not how powerful your computer is. Making the interval longer is not a suitable way to ease a struggling PC, and YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Instead, lower the encoding workload or stream quality until OBS and your connection can deliver a stable stream. Choose the encoder your hardware supports, then select a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that work reliably together. There is no single best resolution, encoder, or bitrate for every “low-end” Indian PC: the exact processor, graphics hardware, encoder options, upload capacity, and content all matter.
Choose a stream quality your setup can sustain
YouTube’s published bitrate guidance
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR bitrate encoding in its encoder settings guidance. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit. The figures below are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a given PC or internet connection can sustain them.
| Codec and output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use these as platform guidance, then check what your encoder supports and what your upload connection can deliver consistently. A nominally higher resolution is not useful if encoding overload or an unstable upload causes dropped frames or interruptions.

Test under realistic conditions
- Run a speed test and use the result as one input when choosing a bitrate; leave enough headroom for upload variation and other network use.
- Test a private or unlisted stream with the same type of motion and audio you plan to broadcast. A mostly still screen may encode more easily than fast movement.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s performance indicators during the test. If the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again rather than changing the keyframe interval.
Keep a low-end PC’s workload manageable
- Choose an available hardware encoder when appropriate. Encoder options depend on the PC’s CPU, GPU, drivers, and OBS version; no particular encoder can be prescribed without those details.
- Reduce resolution or frame rate if encoding overload persists. A stable lower-quality stream is preferable to a higher setting that drops frames.
- Avoid adding a separate recording workload without checking capacity. OBS notes that a separate recording encoder uses additional resources; constrained hardware may struggle when streaming and recording at once. See the OBS recording output guide.
- Keep the 2-second keyframe interval. Tune the encoder and stream-quality settings instead.
Troubleshoot common keyframe and stream problems
YouTube reports that keyframes are too far apart
Check the streaming encoder’s keyframe field in OBS and set it to 2 seconds. If it uses frames, use frame rate × 2—for example, 60 at 30 fps. YouTube’s troubleshooting page also mentions closed GOP; if the warning persists after correcting the interval, check the encoder’s GOP settings and whether it can produce a closed GOP.
You cannot find the keyframe setting
Open Settings → Output and look in the streaming encoder section. Switch Output Mode to Advanced if needed. The exact control can differ by OBS version and encoder, so consult the selected encoder’s available settings rather than assuming every setup has the same label.
The stream drops frames or OBS reports overload
These symptoms point to a workload or connection problem, not a need for a longer keyframe interval. Reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate; select an encoder the PC can handle; and retest with representative video and audio. Compare OBS performance with YouTube stream health to distinguish local encoding trouble from upload instability.

The bitrate looks right, but the stream remains unstable
YouTube’s recommended bitrate is not evidence that your particular upload connection can sustain it. Retest at a lower bitrate, check upload stability, and account for other devices or applications using the connection. Prioritize continuity over the highest listed setting.
