Yes—YouTube accepts H.265/HEVC for live ingest. For a standard SDR stream, use a compatible RTMP or RTMPS encoder, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), and YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you actually send. HDR is a separate HLS workflow with stricter HEVC and metadata requirements.
The settings below reflect YouTube Help pages checked on October 3, 2026; platform requirements can change. They apply to the encoder’s live output, not automatically to a video file just because its filename says H.265.

Recommended H.265 settings for SDR
For a typical pre-recorded SDR video, configure the encoder to send a continuous live feed over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm that the encoder supports both HEVC and your selected protocol; YouTube’s acceptance of a codec does not mean every encoder can send it.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Video codec: H.265/HEVC.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps. Preserve the source’s intended frame rate where possible.
- Scan and pixels: progressive scan and square pixels.
- Advanced video: 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, and CABAC are YouTube’s listed recommendations.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
YouTube’s Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings. If you use a custom stream key with manual resolution settings, check that the selected resolution matches the encoder’s actual output. Match the source aspect ratio and frame rate where the encoder allows, but verify the outgoing feed rather than relying on the source file’s name or container.

Audio settings
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Use AAC if the stream needs 5.1 surround: YouTube lists 5.1 only for AAC. Its listed audio settings are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1.
HDR needs a different configuration
Do not apply the SDR settings unchanged to an HDR stream. YouTube’s HDR live guidance supports HEVC only and requires 10-bit video, BT.2020 primaries, BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix coefficients, and transfer characteristics matching the source: ST 2084 PQ or HLG. Do not mark SDR or mismatched material as HDR.

HDR live ingest requires HLS and a stream key configured for HLS. YouTube says to leave “Turn on manual settings” unchecked, which is the default. Its HLS requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range mode, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Confirm your encoder supports this configuration.
HLS sends video in segments rather than as a continuous feed, so it has more latency than RTMP. “Ultra low-latency” is unavailable when HLS is selected. For SDR, use RTMP/RTMPS unless your encoder requires HLS ingestion.

Check upload bandwidth and test before going live
YouTube’s network guidance says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends leaving 20% headroom and accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable. Other users and devices on a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder.
- Confirm channel eligibility first. YouTube says a channel needs verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; its current start guide also says users must be at least 16 to live stream. Check eligibility before spending time configuring a feed.
- Inspect the source and output. Check the video’s resolution, frame rate, SDR/HDR state, audio codec, and audio continuity. Make sure the encoder produces a valid continuous feed using the intended codec and protocol; an H.265 file is not necessarily ready to send unchanged.
- Measure the real upload path. Test the connection the encoder will use, including any shared-network constraints. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom after accounting for the stream and any backup stream.
- Set up in advance. YouTube’s encoder tips suggest setting up at least 2 hours before the event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before it. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees against failure.
- Preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the stream appears in the preview and on the intended channel or watch page. Monitor sound and picture, and check that a local archive, if you are making one, is intact.
- Test representative content. Include movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Look for stutters, missing audio, incorrect color, or a mismatch between configured and detected resolution before relying on the feed.
Choose an encoder workflow that fits the stream
YouTube lists software encoders, hardware encoders, and cloud tools. A physical encoder is not inherently required. For a one-off stream, software may be sufficient if it supports the codec and protocol you need. For recurring or continuous playback, weigh file handling, scheduling, restart behavior, monitoring, and current codec/protocol support; verify those details with the provider.

YouTube’s encoder directory includes OBS as free, open-source recording and streaming software, and Gyre as a cloud-based service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming. Its HLS setup guidance includes OBS among encoders supporting HLS output. The directory listing establishes category fit, not current pricing, a particular file’s compatibility, or suitability for every channel. Broadcast-grade services and hardware may make sense for specific production requirements, but are not necessary by default.

Common problems and fixes
- The encoder cannot select HEVC: Check whether the encoder supports H.265 for live output and for the selected protocol. YouTube accepting HEVC does not add codec support to an encoder that lacks it.
- The stream drops or buffers: Compare total outgoing bitrate—including a backup feed if used—with available upload bandwidth. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and preserve the recommended headroom; check whether other network users are consuming bandwidth.
- The feed is rejected or the preview is wrong: Verify the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, stream key, and protocol. For HDR, confirm HLS and the required source-matched 10-bit color metadata.
- Audio is missing or breaks up: Check that the encoder sends AAC or MP3 and that sample rate and channel configuration match the intended output. For 5.1, use AAC.
- HDR looks washed out or incorrectly colored: Check that the source is genuine HDR and that BT.2020 primaries, matrix coefficients, and PQ/HLG transfer metadata match it. Do not label SDR material as HDR.
- There is more delay than expected: HLS has more latency than RTMP because it sends segments, and YouTube does not offer ultra-low latency with HLS. Use RTMP/RTMPS for SDR if it meets your encoder and workflow needs.
Copyright and reused-content checks still apply
Using a pre-recorded file does not change the need to have the rights to its music, footage, and other included material. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming policies before broadcasting, especially for music or other content you did not create or license. Separately, YouTube monetization eligibility and reused-content policy are not guaranteed by using an accepted codec or by keeping a stream live; check the current rules in YouTube Help for your channel and content.
