YouTube Live Bitrate for a 1080p Gujarati Devotional Playlist on a Slow Connection

If your upload speed is low or variable, start by testing 720p at 30 fps rather than forcing 1080p. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p30; those are encoder settings, not guarantees that a connection at the same speed will stream reliably. Keep 1080p only if a representative test on your actual connection stays healthy.

Choose a starting bitrate based on your connection

Measure upload speed where and when you plan to stream. YouTube Help recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate, but does not give a universal spare-bandwidth percentage that guarantees stability. Your sustained capacity and its variation matter more than a single result.

The figures below are YouTube Help’s dynamically maintained encoder recommendations, checked in 2026; the page does not show a publication date. Minimums are listed settings, not a promise of reliable delivery.

Resolution and frame rate Codec Listed minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These video figures do not include audio. YouTube’s recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 kbps. Treat the encoder’s total outgoing load and the measured connection as separate considerations; YouTube does not publish a universal upload-speed headroom formula.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Set up and test the playlist before going live

  1. Measure the real connection. Run a speed test at the streaming location and repeat it if upload speed varies. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A single peak result does not establish that the connection can sustain a stream.
  2. Start conservatively. For a constrained connection, try 720p30 with a bitrate the connection can sustain. If 1080p is important, test 1080p30 before considering 1080p60; its H.264 recommendation is lower than 1080p60’s.
  3. Configure the encoder. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure RTMP extension. Its supported video codecs include H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Confirm your encoder and chosen ingest configuration support the codec and protocol you select.
  4. Set audio separately. Choose AAC or MP3, both listed as supported audio codecs, and account for stereo audio in the outgoing stream. YouTube’s recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 kbps.
  5. Run a representative test. Test with the playlist’s actual audio and visuals, including transitions or movement, then check YouTube’s stream health. Static devotional artwork may behave differently from fast-moving footage, but YouTube does not specify a special bitrate reduction for Gujarati devotional content or low-motion video.
  6. Adjust based on the test. If stream health is poor, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again rather than repeatedly pushing an unstable setting. Keep 1080p only if the test remains stable on the connection you will use.
  7. Choose latency for the audience experience. For a continuous playlist with little or no audience interaction, normal latency is a reasonable starting point. YouTube notes that lower latency can lead to more playback buffering; it is most useful when immediate interaction matters.

H.264, AV1 and H.265: what changes

YouTube’s table lists different recommended bitrates by codec. At 1080p30, it gives 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; at 1080p60, it gives 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are encoder recommendations, not evidence that changing codec will fix an unstable internet connection. Use a codec your encoder supports and test it on the actual connection.

When a 24/7 playlist needs to stay live

If the playlist must keep running after your computer is turned off, a cloud service is an alternative to keeping a local encoder and connection running. StreamNeo is #1 among the options described here: it keeps a YouTube playlist running from the cloud at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
