YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1 or HEVC, versus 17 Mbps for H.264. Treat those as platform targets—not proof that a particular Arc model, driver, or OBS setup will sustain them—and test a representative stream before relying on it.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for OBS
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS and CBR, with keyframes every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. Use the table below as the ingest target for the listed resolution and frame rate, then confirm the actual output and stream health in a test.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | AV1 or HEVC | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the live settings page does not show a publication or update year. They are not a model-specific Arc performance benchmark. YouTube advises matching the stream quality to the available connection and testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Set video and keyframe behavior
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation; its supported ingest protocols include RTMP and RTMPS.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists up to 60 fps. Choose 30 or 60 according to the video you are streaming and the target bitrate.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR.
Set audio to match the stream
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, its guidance recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. For 5.1, use AAC at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz; 5.1 support is limited to AAC. Check that the playlist’s audio format and OBS output agree so that a video-only test does not hide an audio configuration issue.

Choosing AV1, HEVC, or H.264 with Intel Arc
OBS release notes document Intel AV1 encoder support for Arc GPUs on Windows in OBS Studio 29.0. OBS Studio 29.1 added AV1 and HEVC streaming over Enhanced RTMP; those release notes described YouTube as then supporting or enabling the feature as a beta. These are compatibility facts for those releases, not a guarantee across every current OBS version, operating system, Arc model, or driver.
| Codec choice | What the cited guidance establishes | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | YouTube lists AV1 ingest. OBS 29.0 documented Arc AV1 encoder support on Windows; OBS 29.1 documented AV1 streaming over Enhanced RTMP. | Use only when the installed OBS, driver, Arc hardware, and YouTube ingest path expose and sustain it. For AV1 at 3840×2160 or above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns. |
| HEVC (H.265) | YouTube lists HEVC ingest and recommends HEVC for HDR. | Consider it when the installed workflow supports it. It is YouTube’s recommended codec for HDR in the cited guidance. |
| H.264 | YouTube lists H.264 ingest; its recommended bitrate is higher than AV1/HEVC at the 1080p targets shown above. | Use when it is the available or better-tested option in your setup, and set bitrate from YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for your output. |
For HDR, YouTube recommends HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For SDR, use Rec. 709. OBS’s hardware-encoding overview explains that hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a dedicated GPU component, while quality varies by encoder generation; it does not establish that Arc AV1 streaming works on every platform. Configure and validate the playlist stream
The exact playlist-source and loop controls depend on how the playlist is built and on the operating system and software versions. The encoder targets below are the consistent part: configure OBS’s stream output to meet YouTube’s ingest settings, then test the actual source, audio, and motion you intend to broadcast.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the environment. Check your Arc model, graphics driver, operating system, and OBS version. Confirm that the installed OBS exposes the intended Intel hardware encoder; release notes alone do not confirm compatibility for every system.
- Set the YouTube ingest destination. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, use the stream key and server details for the event. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Choose the output codec and resolution. Select AV1, HEVC, or H.264 only if it is available in your installed OBS/driver setup and accepted by the YouTube ingest path. For 1080p60, use the matching recommendation in the bitrate table; for 1080p30, use its corresponding row.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, never longer than four seconds.
- Set audio and color. Use an audio format and sample rate appropriate to stereo or 5.1, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Use HEVC, not AV1, if following YouTube’s cited HDR guidance.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Play a representative portion of the playlist with its normal audio and motion. Check OBS’s output and YouTube’s stream-health messages before depending on it for a public or unattended broadcast.
- Monitor the real event. Watch stream health and messages during the broadcast; a configured bitrate is not evidence that the connection is delivering it consistently.
Why an Arc AV1 stream may show a low bitrate
Intel’s support article, “OBS Streaming Bitrate Low for AV1 Encoding,” last reviewed March 19, 2025, describes an unusually low AV1 streaming bitrate issue in OBS for the Arc A380, A370M, and A350M, and says Intel is aware of it. The report is model-specific and may have changed since review; it is not evidence that all Arc GPUs have the issue.

- Verify that OBS is actually using the intended AV1 hardware encoder and that the output bitrate matches the configured target.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages while a test is running; compare the received stream with the selected codec and resolution.
- If the issue persists on one of the named models, check Intel’s article and current driver/OBS updates. For a practical broadcast, test a supported alternative such as H.264 or HEVC rather than assuming the configured AV1 value is being delivered.
Intel also documents OBS as a supported Stream Assist application on eligible Arc systems, with its listed Stream Assist requirement including an 11th-, 12th-, or 13th-generation Intel CPU paired with a discrete Arc GPU. Stream Assist is a distinct feature; it is not a general guarantee of AV1 streaming compatibility. See Intel’s OBS Stream Assist requirements and Intel’s OBS AV1 low-bitrate article.

Encoder compliance does not establish that a playlist is eligible to stream. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights or permission to use the video and audio, and review YouTube’s live-stream and channel policies. A technically healthy stream can still face a copyright claim or interruption if the content is not cleared. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help organize those checks.
