Use one stable frame rate for the live broadcast rather than changing the encoder output between clips. For a playlist mixing 24 fps and 30 fps footage, 30 fps is a practical starting point if the 30 fps clips matter; choose 24 fps instead if preserving the look of 24 fps motion is the priority. Neither is a YouTube-mandated choice: test both types of footage and their transitions before broadcasting.
Why mixed clips do not require a changing live frame rate
A playlist can contain files with different frame rates, while the live encoder sends a single configured output cadence. YouTube’s live settings ask you to specify the encoder’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate; they do not describe a special mixed-rate playlist mode. Choosing one output rate and testing the result is a workflow recommendation, not a quoted YouTube rule.

Keep three frame-rate concepts separate:
- Source file: the rate at which an individual clip was recorded. YouTube’s upload guidance says to encode and upload a video at its recorded rate, and lists both 24 and 30 fps as common rates. That guidance applies to standalone uploads, not a requirement to change a live encoder setting at every playlist transition. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
- Live encoder output: the rate sent to YouTube for the broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps and says it detects the encoder settings. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Viewer renditions: YouTube transcodes a live stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Transcoding does not mean a creator can send unrelated frame rates clip by clip without a consistent encoder output.
Choose 24 or 30 fps for the broadcast
There is no universally best choice for a mix of 24 fps and 30 fps clips. The right setting depends on which footage’s motion matters most and which output rate your encoder can maintain reliably.

YouTube’s reviewed documentation does not specify whether mixed-rate content is converted through repeated frames, dropped frames or interpolation, and it does not promise seamless transitions. Inspect the actual result rather than assuming a particular conversion method.

Set the live encoder and YouTube stream
- Pick the output resolution and frame rate. Configure a single rate your encoder can maintain throughout the broadcast. YouTube supports live output up to 60 fps; for a mixed 24/30 fps playlist, compare 24 and 30 fps using representative clips before settling on one.
- Match the bitrate to codec, resolution and frame rate. For 1080p30, YouTube’s current live table recommends 14 Mbps with H.264, or 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. These are recommendations for the stated codec and settings, not interchangeable targets for every stream. Check the live encoder table for the exact combination you send.
- Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS; listed video codecs include H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current details.
- Configure the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains Live Control Room and reusable stream settings. Select the appropriate stream and use its stream key in your encoder; treat that key as private, because someone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Check network capacity. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Test the actual connection and watch stream health, not just a speed-test result. See Streaming tips.
Build and test the playlist in OBS
OBS can play a playlist through its VLC Video source. The source can play items sequentially or shuffled and can loop; VLC must be installed. The OBS documentation describes these controls but does not guarantee seamless transitions or a particular quality of mixed-frame-rate conversion. See OBS Media Sources.
- Install VLC, then add a VLC Video source to the OBS scene you intend to stream.
- Add the playlist files in the intended order, choose sequential playback or shuffle, and enable looping if the playlist should repeat.
- Set OBS’s output resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate and keyframe interval to match the YouTube live settings you selected. For the bitrate, use the YouTube recommendation for the codec, resolution and frame rate actually sent.
- Preview the full sequence or a representative test: include 24 fps and 30 fps clips, their transitions, audio, and footage with motion similar to the real broadcast.
- Check for judder, duplicated or dropped-looking motion, audio sync drift, decoding problems and interruptions at transitions. Adjust the output rate if needed, then repeat the test.
- Before going public, run a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate for your channel, monitor YouTube’s stream health and confirm the playlist continues as expected.

Troubleshoot common mixed-rate problems
- Motion judders on one type of clip: The chosen output cadence may suit the other source rate better. Test the same scene at 24 fps and 30 fps output and choose the more acceptable result for the motion that matters most.
- Stutter or a pause at a playlist transition: Confirm VLC is installed, the files decode correctly, and OBS’s playlist source is configured as intended. Test transitions in the actual scene; the source documentation does not promise seamless playback.
- Audio drifts out of sync: Check audio sync on both source types and across transitions during a test stream. If the problem repeats, isolate the affected clip and verify its playback and encoding before using it in the playlist.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations, confirm CBR and keyframe interval, and verify that the upload connection has the recommended headroom.
- Backup feed triggers a health warning: Match its frame rate to the primary feed.
- The stream stops when the computer or connection stops: OBS is running on your device, so it depends on that device and its connection remaining active. For a cloud-run option, see below.
