For a pre-recorded church service on YouTube Live, start with H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Match the source frame rate and choose a resolution and bitrate your sustained upload can handle: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 or 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. Test the complete playback loop and its end-to-start transition before the service; the exact loop controls depend on the playback or encoder tool you use.
Recommended encoder settings
These are settings for sending a live stream to YouTube, not settings for encoding the video file you upload into a playback tool. Use the live-ingest recommendations for the outgoing stream.

| Setting | Starting point | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use it if your encoder supports it. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support reliably. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Resolution and bitrate | 1080p30 H.264: 14 Mbps; 720p30 H.264: 8 Mbps | Match the source where possible. Do not upscale a lower-resolution recording just to select a higher output setting. |
| Frame rate | Match the source, up to 60 fps | Avoid converting frame rates without a specific reason. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds | YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | YouTube also permits MP3. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC. |
| SDR picture | Progressive, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations. |
For a mostly static pulpit or sanctuary shot, 1080p30 is a practical target when the recording is 1080p and the connection can sustain the required bitrate. Use 720p30 when that better matches the source or when the upload path cannot reliably sustain 1080p30. This is practical guidance based on YouTube’s recommendations, not a church-specific YouTube requirement.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For a 1080p30 H.264 stream at 14 Mbps plus 128 kbps audio, applying that margin works out to roughly 17.7 Mbps of stable capacity for the stream alone. This is a calculation from YouTube’s recommendations, not a separately published minimum; other network use needs extra capacity. A speed-test peak does not establish that your connection can sustain the bitrate throughout the service.
1080p30 or 720p30?
- Choose 1080p30 when the recording is 1080p and the connection can hold the recommended bitrate with headroom. It can help preserve detail in faces and readable lyrics or slides.
- Choose 720p30 when the recording is 720p or your sustained upload is not reliable enough for the 1080p30 target.
- When deciding between H.264 and AV1/H.265, weigh the lower listed bitrate recommendations for AV1/H.265 against the codec support and compatibility of your encoder and playback workflow. YouTube’s recommendations do not establish a universal best codec for church services.
Configure the playback loop and encoder
A loop is produced by the media playback or encoder workflow, not by a universal YouTube Live setting. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers ingest settings and stream checks; it does not prescribe a loop button or interface path. Set the selected tool to repeat the recording or playlist, then configure its outgoing stream using the settings above.

- Prepare the media. Confirm that the recording plays with the intended audio, picture and service order. Decide whether the stream should repeat one video or move through a playlist.
- Set the repeat behavior in your playback tool. Look for that tool’s loop, repeat or playlist controls. Names and locations vary, so follow the documentation for the encoder or media player you actually use.
- Configure the outgoing encoder. Select RTMPS where supported, H.264, CBR, the resolution and bitrate appropriate to the source and connection, the source frame rate, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Connect YouTube Live. Enter the stream URL and private stream key in the chosen encoder. Keep the key secret; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the channel’s stream.
- Test the full loop. Send a test stream with similar audio and motion. Watch the recording from start to finish, including the transition where it restarts or hands off to the next playlist item. Confirm there is no unintended gap, frozen picture or missing audio.
Prepare and monitor the event
Before going live
- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
- Confirm the stream appears on the channel or watch page and can be opened on a mobile device.
- Test the entire media loop and transition, not just a short opening segment.
- Keep at least YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom and avoid relying on a short-lived speed-test peak.
While the stream is running
- Watch stream health and warnings in YouTube’s live tools.
- Check both picture and audio during the service; a stream can remain connected while the media playback or audio feed has failed.
- If DVR is enabled, viewers can pause and rewind. Latency is the delay between encoding and playback; reducing it can increase buffering. For an unattended prerecorded loop, stable playback is usually more important than the lowest possible latency.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated buffering, dropped frames or poor stream health | The upload cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, or other network use has consumed the headroom. | Check sustained upload capacity and competing network traffic. Lower the resolution or bitrate to a YouTube-recommended option the connection can maintain. |
| Stream connects, but the video does not restart | The playback tool is not set to repeat, or its playlist has ended. | Check the selected player’s loop or playlist behavior, then test through the end-to-start transition. |
| Video is visible but audio is missing or wrong | The media player or encoder has selected the wrong audio source or format. | Check the recording’s audio, the encoder’s selected audio input and the outgoing AAC stereo configuration. Test the complete media loop with sound. |
| Live Control Room has no preview | The encoder may not be sending to the intended event, or the stream URL or key may be incorrect. | Verify the event selection and the stream URL and key in the encoder. Keep the key private. |
| Lyrics, slides or faces look soft | The source may be lower resolution than the output, or the selected bitrate may not suit the content and connection. | Check the source resolution first. If it is 1080p and the connection is stable, compare the 1080p30 recommendation with your current settings; do not upscale a lower-resolution source expecting added detail. |
| The stream is delayed or viewers report buffering | Latency mode and playback stability involve a trade-off; unstable throughput can also interrupt viewing. | For a prerecorded loop, prioritize a stable connection and stream health over minimizing latency. If using DVR, remember viewers can pause and rewind. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming a recording or playlist, make sure the church has the rights needed for every element it contains, including music, performances, readings, slides and any third-party footage. A prerecorded service is not exempt from copyright rules because it is being rebroadcast live. YouTube’s encoder settings do not determine whether content is authorized or whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; review the applicable YouTube rules for the channel and content before scheduling a loop.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded church-service videos without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
