First identify where the thumbnail disappears: on the original website, in the directory’s saved-link listing, or only in a social-sharing preview. Those are different fetch paths, so the fix depends on which one is failing. A directory may fetch metadata from its own server, while a browser or social platform may fetch the image independently.
Find out where the thumbnail is missing
- Check the original page. Open the linked website and see whether the image you expect is actually present there. If it is missing at the source, inspect the page’s image metadata and image URL.
- Check the directory entry. If the image is visible on the original page but absent in the directory, investigate how the directory fetches, parses, stores, or displays preview metadata.
- Check the share card separately. If the directory looks correct but a social preview is blank or outdated, inspect Open Graph metadata and the social platform’s cached preview.
This distinction matters because a browser loading an image successfully does not prove that a directory server or social platform can retrieve it.

Check the source page’s image metadata
If WordPress or another publishing system is supposed to provide a social preview, inspect the published page’s HTML source for og:title, og:description, and og:image. Confirm that the og:image URL is correct and opens as an image. A missing tag, a mistyped URL, or an inaccessible image can leave a preview without a thumbnail.

Some plugins can generate an image for a preview; the exact options depend on the plugin and its configuration.

When the directory fetches previews from its server
Some directories request metadata from the linked site on the directory server rather than relying on the visitor’s browser. In that case, test reachability from the server running the directory and review its logs or stored metadata. The remote site may block automated requests, respond too slowly, omit an Open Graph image, or resolve to a private IP range. LinkAce’s v2 troubleshooting documentation says: “If the remote site blocks requests, responds slowly, has no Open Graph image, or resolves to a private IP range, LinkAce falls back to basic link data.” That is a LinkAce-specific explanation, not a guarantee that every directory behaves the same way.
- Look for request errors, timeouts, or parsing failures in the directory’s logs, if available.
- Check whether the target is reachable from the directory host, not only from your own browser.
- After correcting the source or fetch problem, refresh or re-fetch the saved link if the directory offers that function.
Menu names, log locations, and refresh controls depend on the directory software and version. If your directory does not document server-side metadata fetching, do not assume that clearing your browser cache will repair a failed server request.

If WordPress is involved
When WordPress generates the preview, view the published page’s actual output rather than relying only on plugin settings. Check for a valid og:image URL and look for duplicate Open Graph tags: a theme and multiple plugins may all emit their own tags, leaving crawlers with conflicting metadata. Divi Open Graph’s troubleshooting guidance also discusses writable uploads, image libraries such as GD or Imagick, memory and time limits, and content-type configuration for its own image-generation feature. Those are Divi-specific checks, not prerequisites for every link directory or WordPress setup.
If the symptom is not just a missing thumbnail—WordPress pages or the admin area are blank—treat it as a broader site failure and follow WordPress’s general troubleshooting path, including isolating plugins or themes as appropriate. If uploaded images or pretty permalinks are failing, WordPress documents resetting permalinks as a troubleshooting step; rewrite support on the server may also need investigation.

Refresh a stale social preview
If the source metadata is now correct but a previously shared card still shows no image or the old one, use the relevant platform’s debugger or preview inspector to request a re-scrape. Social platforms can retain cached preview data after the page has been fixed, so changing the source alone may not update an existing card immediately.
