1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf OBS is reporting network dropped frames, your stream may be sending more data than your connection can reliably deliver—or the connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable. Lowering bitrate is a sensible first test, but first check which kind of frames are being lost: network drops, rendering lag, and encoding lag have different causes and fixes.
First identify what kind of frames are dropping
In OBS, check the Stats window and the exact warning shown by OBS or YouTube Live Control Room. OBS describes network-dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That is different from frames missed because the computer cannot render or encode the scene fast enough. OBS explains network drops; its performance guide covers rendering and encoding lag.

| What you see | Likely area to investigate | First response |
|---|---|---|
| OBS network dropped-frames count rises | Upload stability, bitrate, Wi-Fi, network software, route, or ingest server | Reduce video bitrate and test again |
| Rendering lag or frames missed due to rendering | GPU load, game frame rate, scene complexity, sources, or filters | Reduce GPU workload and output demands |
| Encoding overloaded or encoding lag | Encoder workload and system resources | Reduce resolution or frame rate and simplify the workload |
| YouTube reports an incorrect bitrate | Encoder settings may not match the selected codec, resolution, or frame rate | Check the exact warning and encoder settings |
Do not treat every dropped-frame or bitrate warning as proof that your internet connection is too slow. Read the specific message and match the remedy to the symptom.

Set bitrate for both YouTube and your connection
There is no single best bitrate for every YouTube stream. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate varies by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain them. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the combination you actually use. The page lists different recommended values for H.264, AV1, and H.265. For example, its H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 50 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. Recommendations can change, so verify the current table before setting up a stream.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Your upload speed must also be stable enough for the stream, with capacity left for ordinary network variation and other traffic. OBS’s connection guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate. Treat that as an OBS troubleshooting heuristic—not a YouTube requirement or a universal guarantee—and base your estimate on stable upload performance, not just a peak speed-test result. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
For example, if the stable upload capacity you measure is 10 Mbps, OBS’s 75% starting-point heuristic would put the total stream bitrate near 7.5 Mbps. Compare that with YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. If your connection cannot reliably support the platform-recommended setting, lower the stream’s demands—often by reducing resolution or frame rate—rather than forcing a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.

Fix rising network dropped frames in OBS
- Run a representative test. Measure upload speed and test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, motion, scenes, and network conditions you expect during the real stream. YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and motion and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder guidance
- Lower the video bitrate. Change it in OBS’s output streaming settings, then stream again and watch whether the network dropped-frames count continues to rise. Lowering bitrate is the first practical test OBS recommends for a connection that cannot keep up. OBS connection troubleshooting
- Try another ingest server if available. A different server may help identify a route or server connection problem; it does not prove that your local upload capacity is sufficient. OBS connection troubleshooting
- If you use Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for Wi-Fi users. A Cat 6 cable is one reasonable way to make that test, but a cable cannot fix an ISP, routing, or ingest-server problem, and a higher-category cable does not increase your subscribed upload speed.
- Check network interference. Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software, bundled network-management software that deprioritizes OBS, outdated network drivers, or router/modem connectivity is involved. Restarting the router or modem can be a diagnostic step; do not replace equipment as a first resort. OBS suggests contacting your ISP if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue. OBS connection troubleshooting
- Use OBS’s dynamic bitrate option only as a fallback. OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta),” which can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and may reduce video quality.
Fix rendering or encoding lag separately
If network drops are not rising but OBS reports rendering lag, missed frames, or encoding overload, lowering bitrate alone may not help. OBS identifies GPU workload as a factor: a game, complex scenes, and other GPU tasks can compete with scene rendering and compositing. Its performance recommendations include:
- Cap the game’s frame rate so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot keep up.
- Simplify scenes and reduce demanding sources or filters.
Make one change at a time and test again, so you can tell which adjustment improves performance. Follow OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guidance for the specific performance warning.

Respond to YouTube’s bitrate warning
Read the exact message in Live Control Room before changing network settings. YouTube’s live-stream error message guidance and encoder settings help distinguish an incorrect configuration from insufficient bandwidth. Check that your encoder’s ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate match the settings you intend to use. YouTube notes that when bandwidth is insufficient for the chosen resolution, you should consider lowering resolution; it also links frame rate and keyframe frequency. A warning about an incorrect bitrate is not, by itself, proof of local network congestion.
