If your YouTube stream drops frames at 60 fps but works at 30 fps, first find out whether OBS reports network dropped frames or a local rendering/encoding problem. Those point to different fixes. Compare the same scene and connection at both frame rates, check YouTube Live Control Room for ingestion errors, then change one setting at a time.
Identify what is dropping frames
Run a short test with movement and audio similar to your actual stream. Keep the scene, game load, encoder, resolution, and network connection the same for the 60 fps and 30 fps comparison. In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the network dropped-frame count and rendering or encoding performance. Also check the stream-health indicator and messages in YouTube Live Control Room; its dashboard checks the incoming stream and displays configuration errors.

OBS defines network dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Rendering or encoding overload is a local performance issue. A stream that stabilizes at 30 fps reveals a workload threshold, but does not by itself prove which part is the bottleneck.

If OBS reports network dropped frames
Start with the outbound connection and configured bitrate—not an encoder preset change. A speed test can help estimate available upload capacity, but total throughput does not prove that your connection to YouTube’s ingest route is stable. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for a stream bitrate; treat that as OBS guidance, not a YouTube target. YouTube also recommends a speed test and advises lowering resolution if you do not have enough bandwidth for it.
- Lower video bitrate, keeping resolution and frame rate fixed. Use the bitrate range for your codec and resolution in YouTube’s encoder settings. If the network counter improves, the selected stream load may have exceeded stable capacity.
- If needed, reduce resolution while keeping 60 fps. This tests whether the connection can sustain 60 fps at a lower stream load and preserves the higher frame rate, though image detail may decrease.
- Check the network path. OBS lists VPNs, network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, and faulty equipment as possible causes. Potential hardware issues can include the modem, router, cables, network cards, switches, or extenders. If you suspect equipment, consult your ISP before replacing it.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a workaround. OBS can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but warns that this reduces quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue.
Make one change, then repeat the same test. Changing bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together may conceal which adjustment helped.

If rendering or encoding performance worsens
If the network counter remains stable while OBS output becomes choppy or shows encoding overload, reduce the work the computer has to do. OBS recommends freeing GPU resources and lowering output resolution or frame rate; its performance guide specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Free GPU capacity. Cap the game frame rate or enable V-Sync, lower demanding game graphics settings, and close other GPU-heavy applications.
- Test a lower output resolution at 60 fps. If performance improves, the reduced workload may let you retain 60 fps with less image detail.
- Try 30 fps if the issue persists. If this stabilizes the stream, 60 fps may exceed available rendering or encoding headroom for that scene and workload. This is a useful diagnostic and fallback, not the only possible remedy.
- Compare local and outgoing output. Check the encoder output and a local recording, and monitor CPU load. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output; if it looks healthy locally but the outgoing stream has issues, investigate the outbound internet connection. See YouTube live stream troubleshooting.
Verify YouTube ingest settings
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. YouTube recommends matching the stream resolution and frame rate to the encoder configuration. Live Control Room can detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default; with a custom stream key, manual selection is available.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
A two-second keyframe interval is 120 frames at 60 fps or 60 frames at 30 fps. If you change frame rate while your encoder specifies the interval as a frame count, check that the resulting interval is still two seconds. YouTube’s error guidance also warns about resolution mismatches, excessive frame rates, incorrect bitrate, and keyframe/GOP configuration; it requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate figures
The figures below are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, not guarantees of a stable connection. They apply to H.264; AV1 and H.265 have separate entries in YouTube’s table, so check the matching codec row rather than reusing these values.

| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum H.264 bitrate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These numbers show why it is inaccurate to assume that moving from 30 to 60 fps always doubles the required bitrate. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and codec as well as frame rate, and a recommended bitrate does not establish that an individual network route can sustain it.

Choose a test based on the signal
| What you observe | Test | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped-frame count rises | Lower bitrate, then test a lower resolution at 60 fps. | May reduce image quality or detail; does not identify a local rendering bottleneck. |
| Network count is stable, but rendering or encoding falters | Free GPU capacity, reduce game load or output resolution, then compare with 30 fps. | Lower resolution reduces detail; 30 fps reduces temporal smoothness. |
| YouTube reports an ingest error | Correct the setting named in the message, such as codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, or frame rate. | Correct ingest configuration does not fix local overload or an unstable network route. |
Prevent a misleading test
- Test with representative motion and audio before an event, as YouTube recommends.
- Keep the scene, game load, encoder, resolution, and connection constant for the initial 60-versus-30 comparison.
- Change only one setting between tests and note the OBS statistics and YouTube health messages.
- Do not treat a successful 30 fps test as proof that your encoder is at fault; check whether network drops or local performance actually changed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock rather than stream a live camera or gameplay session, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60 fps for one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a replacement for OBS when you need to broadcast a live camera or game session. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
