Yes. Your source videos can be 1080p while the live stream you send to YouTube is 720p. Set the encoder’s outgoing resolution to 1280×720 and make sure the workflow scales the 1920×1080 footage down before sending it. YouTube supports 720p live ingestion; that does not, by itself, confirm that one uninterrupted stream will run indefinitely.
How can I stream 720p from 1080p videos?
Source-file resolution and live-stream ingestion resolution are separate. A 1080p video does not force the stream to be 1080p: the playback or encoding workflow can downscale it to 1280×720. In Live Control Room, specify the encoder’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate; the exact setting names depend on the encoder you use. Recommended 720p bitrate settings
YouTube’s guidance recommends the following bitrates for 720p at either 30 or 60 frames per second. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality, and YouTube may update its table; check the linked encoder page for current guidance before configuring a stream.

The same guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. Select settings your encoder supports and confirm the current recommendations on YouTube’s page.

Will YouTube downscale my live stream?
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats. That is different from downscaling your 1080p source before transmission: set the outgoing encoder resolution to 720p if 720p is what you want to send. As YouTube puts it, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” YouTube Help.
720p has fewer pixels than 1080p, so it carries less fine detail, though perceived quality also depends on the codec, bitrate, content and viewing conditions. YouTube’s advice to choose the highest supported resolution and bitrate appears in its guidance for 360-degree video; it should not be read as a universal rule that every stream must use the highest possible resolution. What should I check before choosing 720p?
- Upload capacity: Choose a bitrate your internet connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Leave capacity for normal fluctuations rather than treating a speed-test peak as a dependable stream rate. YouTube Help: encoder settings; YouTube Help: stream health.
- Frame rate and motion: Use 30 fps or 60 fps according to your footage and playback needs, and apply the bitrate recommendation for the chosen codec and frame rate.
- Quality at the intended viewing size: If viewers need the extra detail of 1080p, sending 720p may not suit the content. If bandwidth or feed stability is the priority, 720p is a supported option.
- Full-pipeline test: Send a short test stream, inspect the preview and monitor stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring. YouTube Help: stream health.
Does 720p confirm that a YouTube stream can run 24/7?
No. The encoder-resolution guidance establishes that 720p ingestion is supported; it does not establish whether one uninterrupted stream can remain live indefinitely or how it behaves if it must restart. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not settle archive handling for longer streams, nor does it establish 24/7 continuity.
