There is no single bitrate that will keep every Indian internet connection stable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose a bitrate for your resolution, frame rate and encoder codec using YouTube’s live-stream settings, then verify that your actual upload connection can sustain the full stream with about 20% headroom. For H.264, 720p30 at 4 Mbps is a practical starting target; YouTube lists 3 Mbps as its minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended. For 1080p30, the listed minimum is 5 Mbps and the recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps. These are encoder settings, not promises that a particular ISP plan or location can sustain them.
What bitrate should I use for a 24/7 YouTube live stream in India?
Start with YouTube’s live-encoder table—not its separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. The right video bitrate depends on ingest resolution, frame rate and codec. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 settings; they are not measurements of Indian broadband performance. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table and any higher-resolution options.

| Ingest resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum video bitrate | H.264 recommended video bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | More motion detail than 1080p30, with a higher upload requirement. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Good detail, but YouTube’s recommended bitrate is demanding for an unstable uplink. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Maintains 60 fps; requires more bitrate than 720p30 at the recommended setting. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A sensible lower-resolution option; 4 Mbps can be a conservative starting target if testing shows 8 Mbps is not sustainable. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | Uses less data than HD while remaining above 360p. |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Lowest listed option here; expect less visual detail. |
For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates are 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. Use one of these only if your encoder supports that codec and YouTube’s current ingest settings permit it. A lower-resolution stream that stays connected is generally more useful than a higher-resolution stream with repeated dropped frames.

How much upload speed do I need for YouTube Live?
Your outbound upload capacity must cover the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving roughly 20% headroom, and warns that other users on the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. A fast advertised download rate does not establish that the upload side is sufficient. See YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.

As a practical calculation, add the primary and backup stream bitrates if you send both, then allow about 20% above that combined total. For example, a single 4 Mbps video stream needs more than 4 Mbps of sustained available upload; do not treat the bitrate itself as a safe connection-speed target. Audio and other network use also consume capacity.
- Connect the encoder using the same wired or Wi-Fi path you intend to use for the broadcast. An Ethernet cable is an optional way to connect a computer to the router, but it cannot increase the broadband connection’s available upload capacity.
- Measure upload performance at representative busy times, not only once at a quiet hour. Repeat the test while the household or workplace is using the connection as it normally would.
- Run a test stream with moving video and audio similar to the planned content. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and watch for sustained dropped frames or interruptions.
- If the stream is unstable, reduce the video bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. Do not assume that a nominal package speed guarantees continuous 24/7 delivery.
YouTube’s guidance supports the headroom and shared-network precautions; it does not establish a nationwide Indian upload-speed baseline, rank Indian providers, or validate any particular ISP plan. Measure the connection at the actual streaming location.

Which encoder settings matter besides bitrate?
In YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance, the key settings are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Ingest protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS when you want an encrypted connection.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, subject to encoder support and YouTube’s current settings.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Every 2 seconds, and no farther apart than 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. In Live Control Room, automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the default. If you need to set these manually, configure the resolution, frame rate and bitrate in your encoder and use the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

How to set up and test a 24/7 broadcast
- Prepare the encoder. Choose a codec, resolution and frame rate, then enter the matching bitrate from YouTube’s live table. Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds between keyframes.
- Connect to YouTube. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or publish it in documents.
- Inspect the preview and health indicators. Send a test with representative audio and moving video. Check that the preview appears and that stream health does not show persistent delivery problems.
- Verify any failover setup. If using primary and backup encoders, YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player switches to the backup. Remember that the two streams add to the required upload capacity.
- Monitor local recording. If you need a complete copy, verify that the local recording file is being written and growing during the test and during the broadcast.
Will a 24-hour YouTube live stream be archived?
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping the full broadcast matters, record a local archive as well. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers cannot seek back to a point before the stream began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance. Plan viewer expectations around that limitation rather than assuming a continuous 24-hour broadcast will behave like a saved video.

Common bitrate and connection problems
- Repeated dropped frames: The available upload may be below the stream’s total bitrate, may be fluctuating, or may be shared by other users. Test at a representative busy time, reduce bitrate or resolution, and retest.
- Download speed looks high, but the stream struggles: Download speed is not upload capacity. Measure the outbound connection used by the encoder.
- The stream works briefly but fails later: A short successful test does not prove 24/7 stability. Test under realistic household or workplace network use and check the stream health during operation.
- Backup streaming makes delivery worse: Primary and backup feeds require capacity together. Include both bitrates in the upload calculation or lower their settings.
- The stream preview does not appear: Check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key shown by YouTube, that the stream key has not been mistyped, and that the configured codec and settings are supported.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: This can be expected for a stream longer than 12 hours; YouTube may limit or disable DVR.
- The broadcast is missing from archives: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when the complete program must be retained.
