YouTube Live Bitrate Settings for a 24/7 Ambient Stream

For 1080p30, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. Configure CBR and two-second keyframes, leave upload headroom, and record locally because a 24-hour stream may not be archived automatically.

For a 1080p30 ambient stream, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps with H.264. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes every two seconds, and use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Make sure your real upload bandwidth can sustain the stream with about 20% headroom. One important 24/7 caveat: YouTube says a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its automatic archive, so record a local copy if you need a complete replay.

Recommended bitrate for a 24/7 ambient stream

Choose the bitrate for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you are sending to YouTube. YouTube’s published values are general ingestion recommendations—not a separate preset for ambient or low-motion video. The figures below are in Mbps.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s recommended ingestion bitrates. Its stated minimums at 1080p30 are 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; those are minimums, not the recommended targets above. If you are configuring 1080p30, use the recommendation for the codec actually sent to YouTube rather than choosing a value solely because the scene has little movement.

Choosing a codec and frame rate

YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs. Use the codec your encoder and workflow can reliably send. The bitrate table gives separate recommendations for AV1/H.265 and H.264; it does not quantify a quality difference for ambient footage.

A static or slowly changing scene usually does not need 60 fps. Set the output frame rate to match the source and its actual motion rather than encoding duplicate frames. This is a practical content choice, not a special YouTube ambient-stream rule.

  • Audio codec: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth, matching YouTube’s advanced recommendations.

Enter the video bitrate that matches your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec in the table. Set audio separately in the encoder, and account for it when checking total outbound bandwidth.

Check upload bandwidth before going live

Your connection must carry the stream’s total bitrate continuously. YouTube says total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Run an outbound upload-speed test under realistic conditions, preferably when the same household or office devices and services that will be active during the broadcast are also using the connection.

  1. Choose your output resolution, frame rate, and codec.
  2. Find the matching recommended video bitrate in the table.
  3. Include audio and any other concurrent streams when estimating total upload use.
  4. Confirm the available upload bandwidth can carry that total while leaving about 20% headroom.
  5. If it cannot, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and select the corresponding bitrate; do not simply keep a setting the connection cannot sustain.

For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream calls for 14 Mbps of video under YouTube’s recommendation. The connection needs capacity beyond that for audio and other traffic, plus the recommended headroom. A speed test is a snapshot rather than a guarantee: congestion and competing network use can change conditions during a long broadcast.

Configure and validate the stream

  1. Set the output: Choose a resolution and frame rate suitable for the source and intended presentation.
  2. Set the codec and bitrate: Select the codec your encoder will send, then enter its recommended bitrate for the chosen output.
  3. Set the remaining encoder options: Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, a supported audio codec, and RTMPS if available.
  4. Check the network: Test upload speed under realistic conditions and leave approximately 20% headroom for total stream bitrate.
  5. Test before the broadcast: Use representative audio and video movement, then watch the stream’s health messages and check sound and picture while live. YouTube Help advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  6. For a broadcast lasting all day: Start a local recording and verify that the file is being written and continues to grow.

What changes when the stream runs for 24 hours

YouTube may not archive the full broadcast

YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable source for a complete automatic replay. Keep a local recording if you need an archive, and check that the file is intact rather than assuming the recording succeeded.

  • Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation

DVR rewind can also be limited

For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. This is a separate concern from bitrate: the live stream may be running, but viewers might not be able to seek back through the broadcast as expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for continuity, not just picture quality

For long broadcasts, check local recording files, test encoder failover, and monitor audio and video quality continuously. These are reliability practices, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. YouTube’s archive and DVR limits still apply regardless of whether the encoder bitrate is configured correctly.

Common bitrate and 24/7 streaming problems

  • The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports unstable health: The chosen total bitrate may exceed available upload bandwidth, or other devices may be consuming the connection. Re-test under realistic conditions, restore the 20% headroom, and lower the output settings if needed.
  • The bitrate seems too low for the selected codec: Check that you used the correct column. At 1080p30, YouTube’s recommendation is 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264.
  • The stream does not meet the expected keyframe guidance: Set keyframes to every two seconds and ensure the interval does not exceed four seconds.
  • The live stream is available but the replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be archived automatically. Use and verify a local recording for a 24-hour capture.
  • Viewers cannot rewind as expected: DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
  • The local archive appears empty or stops growing: Check the encoder’s local recording status and file before relying on it as the backup; monitoring and verification are part of the long-stream workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer, OBS, or a home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home while the stream runs.
  • Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The same product is available on shorter or longer billing periods, and UPI and cards are accepted in India. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. To try it, start your free first day with StreamNeo.
