For 720p60 YouTube Live, set video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1/H.265, if your BSNL connection can sustain the full stream with upload headroom. YouTube lists lower minimums—3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265—but these are encoder minimums, not guarantees of a stable stream. The right setting depends on your measured upload speed at the time and place you stream, not the BSNL name alone.

These are YouTube Help’s current live-encoder figures, accessed in 2026. They refer to video bitrate, not total network use: audio and any additional stream load also consume upload capacity. The listed minimums should not be treated as a target for a reliable gaming stream, particularly on a shared or variable connection.

Check whether your BSNL upload can support it
BSNL service does not imply one universal upload speed. Performance can vary by plan, location, time, network conditions and household use, so test the connection you will actually stream on. YouTube says the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom. It also notes download speed is often higher than upload speed.

Use results under typical conditions, including gaming and other household devices if they will be active.
- Account for the whole stream: video bitrate plus audio and any other stream using the connection. If you use primary and backup streams, include both.
- Compare that total with your sustained upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If the connection cannot meet the recommended setting with room to spare, start lower and test rather than assuming the advertised plan rate is available upload bandwidth.
- Run a private or unlisted test with representative gameplay movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health. If it is unstable, reduce the bitrate and test again.
YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Its encoder help also recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. A brief high reading is not proof that a variable connection can hold that rate throughout a stream.

Encoder settings for a 720p60 gaming stream
- Resolution and frame rate: 1280 × 720 at 60 fps.
- Bitrate: Use the codec-specific recommendation above if your connection sustains it with headroom; otherwise lower it and test.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure option; RTMP/RTMPS are listed encoder options.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Color, for SDR: Rec. 709.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 among its live encoder options. The codec you choose changes the 720p60 bitrate recommendation, so do not apply the H.264 figure to an AV1 or H.265 stream.
When the stream drops frames or loses stability
- Upload rate is below the stream’s total bitrate: Lower video bitrate, then repeat a representative test.
- The test passes but a live session struggles: Other devices or users may be consuming bandwidth, or upload performance may vary. Test under the actual household load and leave the recommended headroom.
- Download speed looks sufficient but upload is not: Judge capacity by measured upload speed. Download and upload rates are not interchangeable.
- Connection disruptions break the stream: YouTube warns that connectivity interruptions can break a live stream. Retest the connection and use a bitrate it can sustain consistently, rather than relying on a short peak.
- You are comparing against a 720p upload bitrate: Do not use YouTube’s prerecorded-upload recommendation as the live setting. Its separate table recommends 7.5 Mbps for 720p high-frame-rate uploads; live encoding has its own settings.
