Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo send a prepared 4K60 video to YouTube Live from Ubuntu 24.04, use FFmpeg with a real-time input, YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate guidance, a two-second keyframe interval, and the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. You’ll need a stable upload connection and an FFmpeg build with the encoder you choose.
Before you start: confirm the source and connection
A 4K60 stream is only as suitable as its source, encoder, and upload connection. First inspect the file rather than assuming its properties. On Ubuntu 24.04, run:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
ffprobe -v error -show_entries stream=codec_type,codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate,pix_fmt,bit_rate,sample_rate,channels -of json input.mp4
Check the video codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and bitrate, along with the audio codec and format. A source already encoded at 3840×2160 and 60 fps with an appropriate codec, bitrate, and keyframe cadence may be sent without re-encoding. Stream copy preserves the existing media; it does not resize, raise the frame rate, change the codec, or repair an unsuitable keyframe interval.
For network planning, YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at 4K60, or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. These are ingest bitrate recommendations, not guaranteed connection speeds or a promise that any system can encode and upload reliably. Confirm that your sustained upload capacity can carry the selected bitrate with room for normal network variation.

Choose the codec and output settings
| Codec at 4K/2160p, 60 fps | YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate | YouTube minimum | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Use when the FFmpeg build and workflow support H.264 encoding. |
| H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR. |
| AV1 | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | YouTube lists AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, but does not support AV1 for HDR. |
YouTube’s guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds between keyframes. At 60 fps, a two-second GOP is 120 frames. For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit; for HDR, it specifies 10-bit and recommends H.265. Match pixel format, profile, and color settings to the actual source and YouTube’s current guidance rather than applying an SDR example unchanged to HDR material. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check FFmpeg on Ubuntu 24.04
Ubuntu 24.04 installations can differ in FFmpeg version, build configuration, and available encoders. Check what is installed before writing a command around a particular encoder:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Confirm that the selected software or hardware encoder appears in the list and is suitable for the input and output format. Ubuntu’s FFmpeg documentation lists VAAPI and QSV hardware acceleration, but their presence in documentation does not establish that a specific installation has the necessary hardware, drivers, or usable encoder. A hardware-encoding option has no effect if it is unavailable or unsupported by the chosen decoder and encoder. Consult the Ubuntu 24.04 FFmpeg documentation for options applicable to your build.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and keep the key private
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream and locate its current stream settings.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for your stream. Use the endpoint provided there; do not substitute a guessed server address.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository, shell history, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS protocol variants; its RTMP protocol documentation describes the FLV output workflow and real-time reading for media files: FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Send a compatible file without re-encoding
Use stream copy only if the inspected file already meets the intended ingest format and cadence. Replace the placeholders with the actual values from Live Control Room, and keep the completed command private because it contains your key.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/live2/STREAM_KEY'
The -re option reads a media file at its native rate so it is sent in real time rather than as fast as the computer can process it. If the source is variable-frame-rate or otherwise unsuitable, stream copy will not convert it into a compliant 60 fps output. In that case, re-encode instead.

Re-encode to an illustrative H.264 4K60 configuration
If the source needs conversion, this H.264 command is a starting example based on YouTube’s 50 Mbps 4K60 recommendation and two-second keyframes. It is not a universal command: inspect the input, verify that your FFmpeg build includes libx264, and adjust scaling, pixel format, profile, color handling, and audio mapping for the actual file and stream.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream and monitor it live
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream if that suits your channel and purpose.
- Include representative motion and audio in the test. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live and checking material similar to the intended stream.
- In Live Control Room, verify the incoming resolution and frame rate, check stream health, and read any warnings or messages before sharing the broadcast.
- Monitor stream health and messages throughout the event. A successful FFmpeg connection alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving the intended quality.
YouTube notes that 4K streams are optimized for normal latency rather than receiving the low-latency improvement option. Select the latency setting appropriate to the event in Live Control Room.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material in the file for a YouTube live stream. A file being available online or playable locally does not establish permission to retransmit it. Review YouTube’s live-stream restrictions and any applicable claims or channel notices before relying on a recording for a broadcast.
Repeatedly streaming prerecorded material does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube reviews a channel against its monetization policies, including rules concerning reused content; a technically successful stream is not evidence of eligibility. Check the policies that apply to your channel and content.
Troubleshooting common problems
- FFmpeg says the encoder is unknown: the installed build may not include the named encoder. Check
ffmpeg -encodersand choose an encoder actually listed, or install a suitable build. - The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health: check the incoming bitrate, resolution, and frame rate in Live Control Room; verify sustained upload capacity; and compare the output against YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation.
- The stream is not 4K60: check the source with
ffprobe, inspect the filter and encoder output, and confirm the incoming format in Live Control Room. Stream copy cannot transform a source with different dimensions or frame rate. - Keyframe warnings appear: make sure keyframes are no more than four seconds apart. For the 60 fps example,
-g 120corresponds to two seconds; that frame count is only two seconds when the output is 60 fps. - No audio, wrong audio, or unexpected stream mapping: inspect the input’s audio streams with
ffprobeand explicitly map the intended audio stream if the file contains multiple tracks or none. - The stream key is rejected or the connection fails: copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace, confirm the stream is active, and replace any key that may have been exposed.
- Hardware encoding fails or has no effect: verify the encoder is listed in this FFmpeg build and that the required hardware, drivers, and compatible decode/encode path are available. Hardware acceleration is installation-specific.
