For a 720p60 YouTube Live gaming stream, set H.264 video bitrate to 8 Mbps, or use 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 if your encoder supports the codec. YouTube’s corresponding minimums are 3 Mbps and 2 Mbps, but those are minimums—not the recommended targets. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and enough stable upload capacity to leave 20% headroom.
Recommended bitrate and encoder settings
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance gives these video bitrate figures for 720p at 60 fps:

| Codec | Recommended video bitrate | Minimum video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
These are YouTube-published recommendations, not a promise that any connection will deliver a stable stream. Treat the recommended bitrate as the target if your encoder supports the codec and your outbound connection can sustain it. A minimum is a fallback threshold, not the setting to aim for when you want consistent quality. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Core 720p60 settings
- Resolution: 1280×720, progressive (720p).
- Frame rate: 60 fps, if the game capture and encoder can maintain it.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS is recommended for secure delivery.
- Video bitrate: 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
Choose the codec your encoder and hardware actually support. Do not select AV1 or H.265 solely to use the lower bitrate if the encoder cannot produce it reliably.

Check upload capacity before going live
Bitrate uses upload bandwidth, not download bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate; its guidance says the total bitrate should not exceed available upload capacity. Check outbound upload speed and stability rather than relying on a download-speed result. The relevant YouTube guidance is at YouTube’s bandwidth and bitrate recommendations.
Calculate the practical target
- Set the intended video bitrate: 8 Mbps for H.264, or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- Include audio and any other stream bitrate when estimating the total being sent; YouTube’s headroom advice applies to the total bitrate, not video alone.
- Allow approximately 20% upload headroom above that total.
- If sending a primary and backup stream, include both streams in the bandwidth calculation.
- Run a test with representative game motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on the setup for a longer broadcast.
A speed test is only a snapshot. It does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats suited to viewers’ devices and network conditions, but that does not remove the need for a stable feed from your encoder.

Turn live gaming moments into a highlights playlist
A live bitrate is for the stream sent to YouTube. It is not the bitrate recommendation for a separately uploaded highlight file: YouTube recommends 7.5 Mbps for 720p high-frame-rate H.264 uploads, while its live-ingest recommendation for 720p60 H.264 is 8 Mbps. These figures apply to different stages of the workflow. The upload guidance is in YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMark moments during the stream
Use stream markers to flag good plays or other moments while the live event is happening. A solo streamer can mark moments during play and edit them afterward; a team can prepare highlights during the broadcast. YouTube’s instructions for creating and editing highlights are in Create a highlight.

Create and organize highlights
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream and create a highlight.
- Trim the clip around the marked moment, then set its title, privacy and description and create it.
- In YouTube Studio, create a playlist and set its title, description and visibility.
- Add the highlight videos from your channel library, then arrange them in the order you want. You can change the order later or add videos by searching, using a URL, or choosing from the library.
See YouTube’s instructions for creating and managing playlists.
Keep a separate recording for long streams
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream that runs under 12 hours. For a stream exceeding 12 hours, the archive may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup; see YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance. If preserving every highlight matters, do not make the YouTube archive your only copy.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream health
The stream drops frames or reports poor health
- Likely cause: The outbound connection cannot sustain the total bitrate consistently, or the planned stream leaves too little headroom.
- What to do: Check upload speed, account for audio and any backup stream, and retest at the target bitrate. If needed, lower the bitrate or use a codec your encoder handles reliably.
The picture looks blocky during fast gameplay
- Likely cause: The stream is below the recommended bitrate for its codec, or the connection is forcing unstable delivery.
- What to do: If capacity permits, target 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 720p60. Test with fast motion representative of the actual game.
The stream does not match the intended 720p60 output
- Likely cause: The encoder output resolution or frame rate is set differently, or capture/encoding cannot maintain the configured frame rate.
- What to do: Verify 1280×720 progressive output and 60 fps in the encoder, and confirm the captured game feed supports the same target.
The archive is missing after a very long broadcast
- Likely cause: The stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns that such streams may not be captured.
- What to do: Keep a local recording for future broadcasts and retain the original footage for highlights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded gaming videos or a playlist, StreamNeo can loop those uploads from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed; StreamNeo streams to YouTube.
