Short answer: YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance does not require a particular H.264 profile or level. Use a compatible encoder preset, follow YouTube’s published stream settings, and test before the event. If your encoder requires a profile or level choice, check its documentation rather than treating one value as a universal YouTube rule.
Does YouTube require H.264 High or Main Profile?
No universal H.264 profile requirement appears in YouTube’s live encoder guidance. The page specifies supported codecs and operational settings, but does not name a required H.264 profile or level. YouTube says the Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming feed into output formats for viewers. That detection is not the same as a published profile or level requirement. YouTube’s live encoder settings

AJA’s HELO v4.2r1 manual recommends H.264 Main Profile as the HELO’s factory default. That is guidance for that encoder, not a YouTube-wide rule, and it does not establish a universal level value. AJA HELO manual
What should I set for profile and level?
- Profile: Choose a compatible preset documented by your encoder’s manufacturer. If it supplies a YouTube-specific preset, use that as device-specific guidance and validate it with a test stream.
- Level: YouTube’s current live settings page does not prescribe one. Keep the encoder’s compatible default unless the encoder documentation gives a reason to change it.
These are practical choices in the absence of a platform-wide profile or level instruction; they are not settings YouTube explicitly mandates. Do not assume that upload-encoding advice applies to live ingest: uploads and live streams are separate workflows.

Use the live settings YouTube actually documents
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For the standard SDR H.264 setup, use the following published parameters:
- Bitrate encoding: CBR.
- Keyframe frequency: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Scan: progressive; pixel aspect: square pixels.
- Advanced video settings: two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Color and depth for SDR: Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
YouTube’s HDR guidance differs: it names H.265 and 10-bit depth, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm your encoder and workflow support the codec and HDR format you plan to send. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Choose a bitrate for resolution and frame rate
The figures below are YouTube’s current recommended H.264 ingest bitrates. The page does not state a publication year for this table, so these should be treated as its current recommendations, not as a dated benchmark. Choose a target your upload connection can sustain consistently; YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate with a speed test. YouTube’s live encoder settings · YouTube live streaming troubleshooting
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
These are recommended ingest rates, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or encoder can sustain them. If your upload fluctuates or the stream health is poor, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a stable combination rather than choosing a higher profile or level in hopes of fixing the connection.

Configure and validate a test stream
- Set the encoder’s output mode. Select H.264 for the SDR configuration above, then set the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
- Set bitrate and stream timing. Choose CBR and the relevant H.264 bitrate from the table. Set a two-second keyframe interval, keeping it at or below four seconds.
- Set documented advanced parameters. Use progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
- Leave profile and level compatible. Use your encoder’s documented preset or compatible default; do not force a supposed YouTube-wide profile or level.
- Run a representative test. YouTube says to test before starting the live stream. Include motion and audio like the actual event, then watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default; manual selection is possible with a custom stream key. YouTube’s live encoder settings
At 2160p/4K, YouTube says low-latency improvement is unavailable, so the stream uses normal latency. Account for that if your event depends on near-real-time audience interaction. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Troubleshoot common encoder-setting problems
- The encoder offers several profiles, but YouTube does not identify one as required: Use the encoder maker’s documented compatible preset and test; a device maker’s recommendation should not be generalized to all encoders.
- The level field has no YouTube-specific value: Retain a compatible encoder default unless its documentation says otherwise. YouTube’s live page does not give a universal level.
- Stream health warns about bitrate or the video stutters: Check actual upload capacity and stability, then lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the uplink can sustain the stream. The published bitrate is a recommendation, not a remedy for an insufficient connection.
- Keyframe-related warnings appear: Verify the interval is two seconds if possible and never more than four seconds.
- The stream looks or behaves differently than expected: Check the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and SDR/HDR settings in both the encoder and Live Control Room; test with content representative of the event and review YouTube’s messages.
Or let it run in the cloud
