For a 720p60 YouTube Live stream, use 8 Mbps video bitrate with H.264, or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates; its listed minimums are lower, but they are not the recommended targets. Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and make sure your upload connection can carry the entire stream with headroom.
Recommended bitrate for 720p60
YouTube’s live encoder table gives codec-specific targets for 720p at 60 frames per second. The figures below are for video, not the stream’s total network use. YouTube Help’s current encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026, lists:

| Ingest video codec | Listed minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| H.265 / HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
For the standard encoder settings, see YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. A minimum is a lower boundary in the table, not the bitrate YouTube recommends for a normal target. If your encoder uses H.264, start at 8 Mbps; if it uses AV1 or H.265/HEVC, start at 6 Mbps, provided your upload capacity supports the full stream.

Settings to use in your encoder
- Resolution and frame rate: 1280 × 720 at 60 fps.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS are listed for live ingestion.
- SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth in its advanced settings.
These are general live-ingestion recommendations, applied here to a 720p60 gameplay playlist stream. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not specify a separate bitrate table for gameplay playlists: the applicable row is determined by the ingest resolution, frame rate and codec, not by whether the video is presented as gameplay or as a playlist.

How much upload speed do you need?
The encoder bitrate is not the whole network requirement. Audio and any backup feed also use upload bandwidth, and available capacity can vary when other devices share the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom and using a reliable connection. Its streaming tips recommend checking outbound upload speed rather than relying on download speed alone.
- Budget for the total outgoing stream, including audio and any backup stream, rather than matching upload capacity to video bitrate exactly.
- Check upload performance at the location and time you plan to stream; competing network use can reduce what is available to the encoder.
- If you send a primary and backup stream, account for both in your capacity planning.
- A wired Ethernet connection can be an optional reliability measure, but YouTube does not require it, specify a cable type or claim it increases your internet plan’s upload capacity.
A connection that barely matches the recommended video bitrate is not enough to conclude that the full stream will be stable. Leave the recommended headroom above the total outgoing bitrate.

Does a playlist stream need a different bitrate?
YouTube’s published table does not give playlist-style streams a special bitrate. Use the standard 720p60 recommendation for the codec you send. That is an application of YouTube’s general live encoder table, rather than a separate playlist-specific rule.

Latency and buffering
Bitrate is not a latency setting. YouTube defines stream latency as the time from capture at the encoder or camera until the stream appears to viewers. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so choose a latency mode with the interaction and reliability your stream needs. See YouTube’s live stream settings for its latency guidance.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
- Stream drops or becomes unstable: Check outbound upload capacity and network use by other devices. Ensure the connection has YouTube’s recommended headroom above total stream bitrate, not just above video bitrate.
- Encoder reports bitrate too high: Confirm the selected resolution, frame rate and codec, then compare the video bitrate against the corresponding 720p60 row. Reduce it if the connection cannot sustain the full stream reliably.
- Picture quality is poor despite a stable connection: Check that the encoder is actually outputting 720p at 60 fps and that the codec-specific recommended target is selected, rather than assuming a listed minimum is the recommended setting.
- Keyframe or rate-control warning: Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval beyond 4 seconds.
- Gameplay setup is unclear: YouTube discusses software encoders and hardware for gameplay and overlays, and names OBS among encoders supporting HLS output. Neither OBS nor a capture card is a requirement for configuring 720p60 bitrate. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and HLS setup guidance for encoder context.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube playlist rather than a live gameplay capture, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
