To add mid-roll ad cue points to a YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, open the stream’s Edit > Monetization settings, turn monetization on, and choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. Manual breaks are inserted from Live Control Room while you stream. A cue point gives YouTube an opportunity to serve an ad; it does not guarantee that an ad will run or that you will earn money.
Before adding live ad breaks: check monetization eligibility
Your channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the stream. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form and live videos, YouTube requires creators to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Ad suitability can also affect whether a stream is monetized. YouTube’s monetization options and module requirements explain the applicable terms.

Turning monetization on makes ad formats available; it does not mean every viewer will receive an ad. YouTube states that “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Viewers may see ads at different times, receive no ad, or continue watching while a slot goes unfilled. A cue point is therefore an opportunity for the ad system, not a promised placement or payment. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream describes these limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTurn on monetization and choose a live mid-roll mode
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Start or schedule the broadcast: Start now from the Stream workflow, or choose a scheduled stream under Manage.
- Open stream settings: Select Edit, then Monetization.
- Enable monetization: Set Monetization to On, if available for your channel and stream.
- Select a mid-roll setting: Choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual and configure its controls. In Manual mode, insert breaks while streaming in Live Control Room.
YouTube may adjust labels or locations, and available settings can differ by locale or channel. If a setting is missing, verify the channel’s monetization eligibility and check YouTube Studio’s current live-stream help.

Choose the ad-break mode that fits your stream
| Mode | Who chooses timing? | How breaks are handled | Control and viewer considerations | YouTube’s stated earnings context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube’s systems select opportunities, aiming for natural breakpoints. | Automatic. Choose Low, Medium, or High frequency. | Less precise creator timing. YouTube describes safeguards: channel members are limited from disruption, mid-rolls are temporarily paused for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and breaks can be snoozed for everyone during high-engagement moments. | YouTube recommends this option. It reports higher average instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-roll ads than for channels that did not; the comparison is not an individual earnings forecast or guarantee. |
| Scheduled | You set a recurring interval. | Automatic breaks at an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | More predictable spacing, but a fixed interval may not line up with the content’s natural pauses. | YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with Automatic. |
| Manual | You choose when to insert a break. | You insert each break during the live stream in Live Control Room. | Most direct timing control, but you must remember to place breaks. If you insert none, no mid-roll ads will be served. | YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with Automatic. |
The reported automatic-mode comparison was an average comparison across channels in 207 countries, as stated by YouTube in January 2024. It does not establish what an individual channel will earn, and YouTube does not say the feature causes a particular creator’s revenue to rise. Ad availability, audience, content suitability, and whether slots serve all affect actual results.
Protect important moments from automatic breaks
When Automatic is selected, use Delay ads in Live Control Room to pause automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes—for example, during a crucial announcement or performance. A five-second countdown appears before automatic breaks resume. This delay does not suppress breaks that you insert manually, so account for that if you combine key moments with a manual workflow. The delay option is described in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Review live-stream ad revenue in Analytics
After a broadcast, open YouTube Analytics and use the Live filter to review revenue for live streams and their replays. Treat the result as reporting on what happened, not as proof that a specific cue point served an ad: a scheduled or inserted slot may not fill, and viewers may have different ad experiences. YouTube’s live monetization help covers the Live filter and reporting.

Optional: use a Stream Deck button for manual insertion
YouTube identifies a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck as an option for inserting live ads. It is an optional physical control surface for a button-based workflow, not a requirement: Live Control Room also supports manual ad insertion. Check the current YouTube and Stream Deck setup instructions for compatibility and configuration; the availability and terms of any referral program are not established here.
