Use a QR code in a YouTube livestream to send viewers to a donation page, product, signup form, social profile, or community. Add it as a broadcast overlay or studio widget, make the destination clear, and test both the code and the page before you go live. If viewers may be watching on the same phone they would scan with, provide a spoken backup or a chat link where available.
Five useful destinations for a livestream QR code
1. Collect donations or direct viewers to a fundraiser
Point the code to the specific donation form or fundraiser page, and explain what the appeal supports. Check that the page opens and the donation route works before the broadcast. Blackbaud’s QR code livestream instructions recommend adding the QR link as a content source in broadcasting software and testing it during the stream.

2. Send viewers to a product or offer
A QR code can take viewers to a product page, shop, or promotion while you demonstrate or discuss the item. Restream documents QR product cards and Live Sales use cases including launches, pre-orders, flash sales, and product demos. Keep the offer and destination aligned so viewers know what they will see after scanning.
3. Promote an affiliate offer
If you have a valid affiliate link, the code can point to that offer. State plainly when a link is an affiliate link and follow the applicable program terms and platform rules. The availability, eligibility, and commission terms of any particular affiliate program depend on that program; a QR code does not establish them.

4. Invite newsletter signups
Link directly to the newsletter signup page and briefly tell viewers what they will receive. Treat the QR code as a route to the signup page, not as a signup function built into YouTube. Restream’s published QR use cases include newsletter subscriptions.
5. Grow a social profile or community
Send viewers to a social profile, website, or community page that is relevant to the stream. StreamYard documents adding QR codes for these types of destinations, with options to brand and label the code. Use a short label such as “Join the community” so the action is clear before someone scans.

How to add a QR code to your broadcast
YouTube Studio does not generate the QR overlays described by these vendor examples. The code is added through your streaming software or studio as a graphic or widget; exact controls depend on the service and may change.
- Choose one destination. Copy the exact URL viewers should visit, and check that it works on a phone without requiring an unexpected login or extra navigation.
- Create the code or widget. You can import a QR image as a graphic in broadcasting software, or use a studio feature that generates a widget from a destination URL. StreamYard documents a workflow for entering a destination, optionally adding a logo and label, customizing colors, and placing the code on stage. Its documentation says QR codes are available on paid plans and may appear in recordings.
- Position it in the broadcast layout. Keep it visible without covering captions, essential on-screen information, or the main subject. If you use branding or a label, preserve enough contrast for the code to remain easy to distinguish.
- Test the complete viewer journey. Preview the stream on the intended devices, scan the code from another device, and confirm that it opens the right destination. Blackbaud’s guidance also recommends testing the code during the livestream.
- Provide a backup route. Put a link in chat when available and say the destination aloud for viewers who cannot scan. If your tool offers to send a selected product link to live chat, verify that it sends the intended page before relying on it.
Make the code usable for phone and TV viewers
A viewer watching on a phone generally cannot conveniently scan a code displayed on that same phone. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes horizontal and vertical live formats: clickable links in chat are available in horizontal live streams, but not in vertical live feeds. YouTube also says viewers may see the vertical version in the Shorts feed on mobile. For a vertical stream, make the spoken destination or another route especially clear; do not assume a chat link will be clickable.

Consider where viewers will watch, not just how the overlay looks in your studio preview. YouTube reported that over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. came from connected TVs in 2025 in an April 13, 2026 blog post. That figure is specific to U.S. viewing in 2025; it does not establish that any particular QR design will scan well. Preview the stream at the sizes and on the devices that matter to your audience.

Before committing to a QR feature or workflow, compare the practical details rather than assuming every studio works the same way.

- Does the streaming service generate the code, or must you import a graphic?
- Can it send the destination link to chat, and is that useful for your stream format?
- Is the feature available on your plan and in the stream mode you use?
- Do you need branding, a label, scan alerts, or product cards?
- Will the code appear in the recording as well as the live broadcast?
