Recommended AAC settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For ordinary stereo audio, its recommended configuration is 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps. In FFmpeg, request that output with -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2. These are recommendations, not a claim that YouTube cannot accept other settings. YouTube’s encoder settings also recommend RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.

FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder is its default AAC encoder. Its bitrate option uses bits per second, and specifying -b:a 128k enables constant bitrate mode for this encoder. Writing it explicitly makes the intended setting clear. The actual output can depend on the installed FFmpeg build and input, so verify it locally if the settings matter to your workflow. Loop a video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
This starting example reads an input file in real time, repeats it, encodes video with libx264, encodes stereo AAC with the recommended audio settings, and sends an FLV stream to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. Replace the filename and endpoint/key placeholder with your own values.

The video options are intentionally minimal: set video bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to suit your source, target, hardware, and upload capacity rather than treating the audio settings as a complete video configuration.
What the loop option does
-stream_loop is an input option, so place it before the -i for the file it should repeat. A value of -1 means loop indefinitely; 0 means do not loop. The loop repeats the input, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted live stream. See FFmpeg’s main options documentation.

Use your own YouTube stream URL and key
In YouTube Studio, set up the live stream and use the server URL and stream key supplied for it. Enter the key in your encoder’s destination as required by your workflow; do not publish it, include it in a public script, or reuse a real key in examples. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains managing stream settings.
Video settings and network capacity still matter
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Video bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; choose them for the video you intend to send. Your connection must carry the total stream bitrate, not just the audio. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20 percent upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and the encoder settings before choosing a target.

Stereo, 5.1, RTMPS, and HLS differences

YouTube documents HLS separately and notes that ultra-low latency is unavailable with HLS. For that ingestion route, follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions; the RTMP/FLV example here is not an HLS configuration.
Validate the stream before making it public
- Confirm the input file. Check that it contains the video and audio you expect and that FFmpeg can read it.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test in YouTube Studio. Use the actual audio and representative movement from the intended stream, not a test file that behaves differently.
- Check the audio and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm that audio is present and that the stream is received as expected before relying on the loop.
- Check the network margin. Leave the 20 percent upload headroom recommended by YouTube for the stream bitrate, including video and audio.
- Only then start the intended broadcast. A successful test confirms that setup worked at that time; it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback later.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg loop-stream problems

Copyright and continuous-stream responsibilities
Looping a file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its audio or video. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. A loop option is a playback setting, not permission to retransmit copyrighted material.
