If YouTube Live is showing 1440p when you expect 4K60, first check what your encoder is actually sending and what YouTube detects. A 4K camera or source does not guarantee a 4K stream: the capture chain, encoder output, bitrate, and ingest connection all matter. Work through the checks below before buying equipment; a faster cable or internet plan will not correct an encoder set to 1440p.
Confirm what the encoder sends and YouTube receives
Separate the intended source from the outgoing stream. Check the resolution and frame rate selected in your encoder, then compare them with the resolution YouTube reports receiving in Live Control Room. Both should indicate 3840×2160 (2160p) at 60 progressive frames per second for a 4K60 ingest.

- If the encoder output is 2560×1440, YouTube is receiving 1440p regardless of whether the camera or video file is 4K.
- If the encoder is set to 2160p60 but YouTube detects 1440p, check the full capture and encoding chain and run a rehearsal while monitoring stream health.
- Do not use the playback quality menu alone to diagnose ingest resolution; verify the received stream in Live Control Room.
YouTube says Live Control Room normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to choose them manually, create a custom stream key and enable “Turn on manual settings” under “Stream Resolution.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Set the bitrate for the actual resolution and codec
YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations differ by both resolution and codec. These are live-stream settings, not recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. Choose the row that matches the codec your encoder sends; do not use a 1440p target bitrate for a 2160p60 stream.

| Ingest format | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 (4K60) | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K60) | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
The figures are YouTube Help’s published live-encoder bitrate figures, accessed in 2026. The recommended bitrate is the relevant target for a stable stream; the listed minimum is not a recommended operating target. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live encoding, along with constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Refer to the official settings table for the current encoder guidance.
Test upload capacity under streaming conditions
A speed test is a useful starting point, but it does not prove that the connection can sustain the encoder’s target while other devices and applications are using the network. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. Run a rehearsal over the same connection and with similar motion and audio to the intended stream, then watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages.

- Ultra-low latency: Stay in the moment with ultra-low latency powered by USB 3.2 Gen 2, ensuring your broadcast and gameplay remain perfectly synchronized, delivering an immersive and responsive streaming experience.
- Set the encoder to the intended 2160p60 output, codec, and bitrate.
- Test upload performance on the actual connection you will use to stream.
- Rehearse with representative content and monitor for warnings, interruptions, or a lower detected ingest resolution.
- If upload performance fluctuates, reduce competing network traffic and test again. Leave practical headroom rather than planning to use every bit of measured upload capacity; YouTube does not specify a universal household speed threshold in its cited guidance.
Ethernet may help if testing points to wireless instability, but it cannot fix a 1440p encoder setting, an incorrect frame rate, or a bitrate mismatch.
Check the stream URL, protocol, and key
The stream key and stream URL tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. In Live Control Room, find the stream settings and use the RTMPS URL; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Reveal the URL from the lock icon in Stream settings, then enter that URL and the correct stream key in your encoder.

- Turn Your Camera into a Pro Webcam: Connect your DSLR or mirrorless camera to any computer and go live in stunning quality
- Stunning quality: Stream and record in 1080p60 or even 4K60 for razor-sharp detail (Requires a compatible camera and the latest Cam Link 4K model)
- Connect More Than Just Cameras: Use a camcorder, action cam, or even your iPhone to level up your content
- No Lag, No Delays: Ultra-low latency keeps your video and audio perfectly in sync, just like it should be
- Your iPad, Now a Pro Field Monitor: Preview your shots in real time on an iPad with USB-C
- Confirm that the encoder is using the RTMPS URL and the intended stream key, rather than a stale or mistyped value.
- If you see an SSL connection error, YouTube says port 443 can be tried.
- If a key may have been compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room.
These connection checks address sending and ingest problems; they do not change a stream’s resolution if the encoder itself is outputting 1440p. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and stream-key management guidance.

YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not offer the low-latency option and are optimized for quality at normal latency. That is a latency trade-off, not an explanation for a 1440p ingest ceiling. Diagnose the encoder output, detected ingest, bitrate, and connection independently.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder output is 1440p | Encoder or capture-chain resolution | Set the actual outgoing output to 3840×2160 at 60 progressive frames per second, then rehearse. |
| Encoder says 2160p60, but YouTube detects 1440p | Received ingest and automatic/manual resolution handling | Compare the received resolution in Live Control Room; if needed, use a custom key with manual resolution settings and retest. |
| Stream health warns or the feed is unstable | Bitrate or upload consistency | Check the target against YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation and test upload performance on the live connection. |
| Encoder cannot connect or shows an SSL error | URL, protocol, key, or connection port | Verify the RTMPS URL and key; for an SSL error, YouTube says port 443 can be tried. |
| Chat or viewer response feels delayed | 4K latency behavior | Account for normal latency; 4K does not offer YouTube’s low-latency option. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not going live from a camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
