Set Thumbalizr’s browser viewport with bwidth and bheight, in pixels. The separate width parameter controls the output thumbnail’s width, not the browser viewport. Whether you can choose custom viewport dimensions depends on your account tier.
Set the browser viewport with bwidth and bheight
In a Thumbalizr Embed API request, add the desired viewport dimensions as query parameters. For example, bwidth=1440&bheight=900 asks for a 1440-by-900-pixel browser viewport, subject to your plan’s limits. The API documentation identifies url as the only required parameter; other settings can use the defaults in your account profile. See the Thumbalizr API documentation.

Encode the target page’s URL when constructing the request. Thumbalizr’s client examples encode the URL and options before building the request; this matters especially when the target URL itself contains query parameters or other reserved characters.
Example request parameters

Use the API’s documented request and signing procedure for your account. Its signing examples derive an MD5 token from the query string and account secret. Keep that secret private: Thumbalizr warns that the older API is unsuitable for embedding on a public page if doing so exposes the API key, and recommends the current Embed API for embedding.

Know which dimensions your plan allows
The current API parameter table lists these browser dimensions by tier. The limits below are the values shown in Thumbalizr’s documentation; check its live documentation and plan pages before choosing an account or relying on a limit.

The API table gives a more specific Gold maximum than Thumbalizr’s demo page, which summarizes Gold and Platinum as supporting larger browser sizes up to 2000 pixels. For a Gold request, use the API table’s stated 1600-pixel limit unless current account documentation says otherwise. Tier descriptions and quotas can change; current plan details appear on Thumbalizr’s features and pricing page and demo page.

Keep viewport size, output width, and page extent separate
- Browser viewport:
bwidthandbheightset the dimensions of the browser area used to render the page. These values can affect responsive layouts. - Thumbnail output width:
widthsets the width of the resulting thumbnail image. It does not change the browser viewport. - Capture extent:
size=screencaptures the visible screen;size=pagerequests a full-page capture, subject to tier availability.
For example, if you need the page to render at a 1440-pixel viewport but want a smaller image file, set bwidth=1440 and set width separately. Do not use width as a substitute for bwidth.
Confirm whether the capture completed
For API responses, inspect X-Thumbalizr-Status. The documented values include QUEUED, OK, and FAILED. A queued response is not the same as a completed screenshot; check the eventual response and any documented generation-time or error headers to determine the result.
Troubleshoot viewport requests
- The page still renders at 1280×1024: Free and Silver are documented with fixed browser dimensions. Use a tier that permits custom dimensions if the account’s current limits allow them.
- Your output image is narrower than the requested viewport: Check whether you set
width. It controls the thumbnail’s output width; changebwidthandbheightto change the browser viewport. - A dimension is rejected or not applied: Verify the account tier and keep each requested value within its documented range. The current API table lists Gold up to 1600 and Platinum up to 2000 pixels in each dimension.
- A full-page request does not produce a full-page capture: Check that you used
size=pageand that the plan supports full-page capture. Free is documented as screen-only. - The request fails or stays queued: Check
X-Thumbalizr-Statusand any error or generation-time headers. Ensure the target URL and request options are encoded correctly and that the API signing string was built according to the vendor’s documentation. - You are putting an API secret in browser-side code: Do not expose the secret on a public page. Follow Thumbalizr’s current Embed API guidance and keep signing credentials private.

Thumbalizr’s blog announced a transition to ScreenshotCenter and described expanded device emulation, including precise viewport and user-agent emulation, as planned for the coming months. That announcement does not establish that those capabilities are currently available in every Thumbalizr interface.
