This guide walks you through the exact places to check in YouTube Studio, how to test properly across devices, and what to do when YouTube still reveals counts or dates.

What’s actually supposed to be hidden (and what isn’t)
YouTube offers limited controls for hiding performance metadata. View counts can be hidden for eligible videos, but the upload date is not something YouTube generally lets you remove from the public UI.
#1 Best Overall
- Search, browse and play thousands of videos.
So if you’re expecting both view count and upload date to disappear everywhere, that expectation is the most common mismatch.
Why you might still see view counts or upload dates
Here are the most frequent causes when YouTube doesn’t hide what you want hidden.
- The toggle is off or was never applied to the exact video you’re checking.
- You’re checking the wrong URL (old revision, different video, playlist version, or a redirect).
- The UI you’re viewing doesn’t respect the hidden setting (embeds, some third-party pages, some feeds).
- You’re testing under conditions that display more metadata (signed-in vs logged out, cached pages, different device/browser).
- Shorts behave differently and can show engagement signals in layouts where view-count hiding is less consistent.
Check your YouTube Studio visibility settings (video-level)
Start at the source: the video’s settings in YouTube Studio. If hiding isn’t enabled for that video, nothing else can fix it.

Hide view count for a specific video
- Open YouTube Studio in a browser.
- Go to Content.
- Find the video that’s not hiding.
- Click Details (or Edit).
- Look for Visibility or a setting labeled Hide view count.
- Toggle Hide view count to On.
- Click Save.
If you see the setting, it’s the authoritative control. If you don’t see the setting, jump to the troubleshooting section about missing toggles.
Confirm changes applied and recheck the right URL
- After saving, wait a few minutes. The YouTube UI can take time to refresh across surfaces.
- Open the public watch page for that exact video.
- Verify you’re not checking a playlist card or a different link format.
- If possible, compare the embedded player vs the watch page.
Check channel-level and feature limitations
Even with correct per-video settings, YouTube can still show upload dates (and sometimes counts) depending on the context.
Upload date visibility rules
In most cases, the upload date is considered core metadata for search, browse, and discovery. That means YouTube typically keeps the date visible on the watch page UI and in many surfaces, even when view counts are hidden.
Also note: if you’re checking the upload date through APIs, transcripts metadata, or tools that parse YouTube pages, you may see the date regardless of the front-end toggle.

View count visibility rules
Hiding view count usually targets the display of the number of views. It does not guarantee that every UI surface and every embed will render identical behavior. If you shared via an embed or a third-party page, that surface may show engagement metrics differently.
Test correctly: the account, the device, and the player matter
When debugging visibility settings, don’t test using the same conditions that created the misunderstanding. You need controlled comparisons.
Use at least two accounts
- Open the video page while signed out (or in a private/incognito tab).
- Also test using a different logged-in account that isn’t associated with your channel.
If the view count is hidden for one account but not another, you may be seeing caching, personalization, or YouTube’s progressive rollout behaviors.
Clear cache and use an incognito window
- Open an incognito/private window.
- Paste the exact watch URL.
- Reload the page and confirm the view count area.
Caching is especially common on mobile where browser tab state can persist across sessions.
Test on desktop, iPhone, and Android
UI rendering differences are real. Test the watch page on desktop and on at least one mobile device (for example: iPhone Safari or iPadOS Safari, plus Chrome on Android).
If it hides on desktop but not on mobile, the setting may be correct while the mobile UI still shows the count in certain layouts.
When you embed or share a video link, view counts can still appear
“Hidden” doesn’t always mean “not available anywhere.” Some embeds or partner placements may show the view count in their own template, even if the watch page hides it.

Embedded players and third-party sites
- Copy the embed code from YouTube (if you’re using YouTube’s embed).
- Test the embed on a clean browser session.
- If you placed the embed on WordPress or another platform, test both in preview and on the live page.
- If you embedded via a custom iframe template, check whether the platform is rendering metadata separately.
If you’re publishing to social networks, those platforms can also render a thumbnail preview that includes or implies view metrics.
Shorts vs long-form: different UI behaviors
Shorts use a different layout and can display engagement signals more prominently. That’s why a setting that behaves one way for long-form videos may feel inconsistent on Shorts.
Where view counts show up on Shorts
Even when view count hiding exists for a creator, Shorts feeds often emphasize likes, comments, and engagement rather than a single “views” number in the same spot as long-form watch pages. Some surfaces may therefore still show a count-like metric.
Upload date visibility on Shorts
The upload date can still be visible in channel pages, search results, or video detail surfaces that show metadata. If your goal is to prevent anyone from determining when it was posted, YouTube typically doesn’t provide a full “remove upload date everywhere” option.
Common mistakes that make it look like hiding didn’t work
- You saved changes to the wrong asset (for example: you edited a different variant, a reupload, or a video in another language track).
- You checked an auto-generated playlist preview where the UI card displays metadata differently than the watch page.
- You’re waiting too little time. UI updates can take minutes to propagate.
- You’re using a browser extension or privacy tool that alters or blocks scripts, leading to inconsistent rendering.
- You’re using an analytics tool that reads structured data and displays the view count even if the UI hides it.
Troubleshooting checklist (fast path)
Use this in order. If you answer “yes” for each item, you’ve eliminated the common causes.
- Is the video the one you edited? Reopen YouTube Studio > Content and confirm the exact ID.
- Did you toggle Hide view count On and Save? Look for confirmation in the Studio UI.
- Did you test on the public watch page (not a share preview/playlist card)?
- Did you test in incognito or signed out? (clear caching influence)
- Did you test from a second account? (remove personalization)
- Did you test on mobile and desktop? (UI differences)
- If embedded, did you test the embed specifically?
If all checks pass and you still see view counts or upload dates where you expected none, it’s likely a limitation of the specific surface or a feature availability constraint.

If you don’t see a Hide view count option in YouTube Studio for a video, you can’t force it to appear. Instead, validate these practical constraints:
- Video type and format: Shorts vs long-form may present different options.
- Account eligibility: some controls can be limited based on rollout, account status, or feature flags.
- Editing surface mismatch: the option can live under Details/Visibility for some layouts and under a different pane for others.
Workaround options (when YouTube can’t hide the data you want): focus on distribution controls. For example, set the video to Unlisted so fewer people discover it, even if the metadata still appears to anyone who has the link.
FAQ
Can I hide the upload date on YouTube?
Typically no. YouTube commonly keeps the upload date visible as part of the video’s public metadata. You can reduce discoverability (like using Unlisted), but full removal across all surfaces isn’t generally offered.
Recommended Free Tools
I turned on Hide view count, but my friend still sees the number of views. Why?
Test again in incognito/signed out to rule out caching and personalization. Also verify you edited the correct video and that you’re checking the watch page, not a playlist card or an embedded surface.
Why does the view count appear in an embed even though it’s hidden on the watch page?
Embeds and third-party placements can render metrics with different templates. Confirm by testing the same embed URL in a clean private window. If it still shows, you’re likely hitting a surface limitation rather than a settings problem.
Does hiding view count affect analytics?
No. Hiding view count is about what viewers see in the UI. Your internal analytics remain available to you in YouTube Studio.
How long does it take for the change to show up?
Often a few minutes, but it can vary. If you changed the setting and it still doesn’t reflect after ~15–30 minutes, re-check the toggle and test a new private session.

Bottom Line
If YouTube isn’t hiding video view counts or the upload date, don’t treat it like a bug until you’ve verified the exact video-level setting and tested the public watch page from a clean session. View counts may be hideable, but upload dates generally aren’t.
Use the checklist to confirm eligibility, confirm the save, and isolate whether the behavior is tied to embeds, Shorts UI, or caching. That’s usually the fastest path to a definitive answer.
