First determine whether the encoder exited, stayed alive but stopped making progress, or continued producing video while the connection to YouTube failed. Then compare encoder logs, local output, VPS resources and network metrics, and YouTube’s stream-health messages at the same timestamps.
First identify what stopped
“VOD” can mean a prerecorded video streamed as live content, while “gaming stream” can also mean live gameplay. The source type and encoder are not specified here, so begin with evidence from the actual failure rather than assuming a particular FFmpeg, OBS, VPS, or YouTube fault.

Save timestamped encoder logs, the service or process exit status, restart history, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages around the time the stream failed. Redact stream keys and credentials before sharing logs.
- Check whether the encoder is still running. If it exited, note its exit status and the last error. If it is still alive, check whether its frame or progress count continues advancing. A live process with frozen progress is different from a process that has stopped.
- Look for clues in the output log. Record messages such as a broken pipe, connection reset, input EOF, or encoder error. Treat them as clues to investigate, not as a diagnosis on their own.
- Compare local output with the stream. If you record a local archive, inspect the time range when YouTube stopped receiving or showing the stream. YouTube recommends checking a local archive and encoder errors when troubleshooting stream quality.
- Align the timestamps. Compare the encoder and VPS logs with YouTube’s stream-health status. This helps distinguish an encoder or host problem from an upstream connection or ingest problem.
Check the encoder, VPS, and connection
Encoder and media
Check the encoder version and its error messages, as well as whether its input kept supplying media. An input that reaches EOF, an encoder error, and a stalled frame counter point to different places to investigate. The stream’s duration alone does not tell you which occurred.
VPS resources and storage
Review CPU and memory pressure during the failure. If the process records an archive, also check disk space and whether the recording remains readable. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking encoder CPU load and errors.

Outbound network and YouTube status
Check the VPS provider’s network metrics and sustained outbound performance, not only a brief speed test. YouTube recommends choosing a bitrate the connection can sustain and testing upload capacity. Its guidance says: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” If the connection test shows a problem, YouTube advises contacting the Internet provider.
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s incoming stream status and error messages against the VPS-side timestamps. A playback error reported by one viewer may be specific to that viewer; reports from viewers on different networks can help indicate whether the issue is more widespread. Viewer reports are useful context, but compare them with encoder output and YouTube’s health status.

Verify YouTube’s streaming settings
These settings are worth checking, but a configuration mismatch alone does not explain why a stream fails only after several hours. YouTube’s current help guidance recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends choosing a bitrate that the connection can sustain.

Those are YouTube’s recommendations, not a measurement of your VPS’s sustained upload capacity. Use a rate the host and its outbound connection can maintain reliably. Test before a long stream with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health and messages while it runs.
Choose recovery for the failure you found
If the encoder exited
A process supervisor or service restart policy can restart an encoder that exits unexpectedly. Record the exit status and logs before relying on restarts: automatic recovery can restore service, but it does not establish or fix the underlying cause.

If the encoder stayed alive but stopped progressing
A restart policy may not help when the process remains alive. Consider a separate watchdog that monitors observable progress, such as advancing frames, and restarts only when progress has stalled. Log each watchdog intervention so you can correlate it with encoder and YouTube messages.
If local output continues but YouTube stops receiving
Investigate the outbound path and YouTube’s ingest status using aligned timestamps and VPS network metrics. A healthy-looking encoder output does not rule out a connection problem. Do not replace the VPS provider unless provider-side performance or service evidence points to it.

A public Ubuntu/FFmpeg project documents layering a process restart policy, a progress watchdog, and a periodic restart. That is one operator’s setup, not an official YouTube recommendation, proof of a general YouTube problem, or a universally suitable restart interval. Base any watchdog or scheduled restart on observed behavior and log what it does.
