On Linux, use Display Capture or Window Capture rather than OBS’s Windows-only Game Capture source. A saved VOD is different from OBS Replay Buffer, which saves a recent gameplay segment to your computer.
What “rerun” means for a YouTube gaming stream
A YouTube live archive is the recording YouTube makes available after a broadcast. It can be watched later as a VOD. OBS Replay Buffer is a separate local feature: it saves a recent segment when you press its configured hotkey. It does not replay or restart a YouTube archive.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the full session matters, record locally in OBS as well. YouTube specifically recommends a local archive as a backup. YouTube Help: archive live streams
Install OBS and confirm Linux gameplay capture
Install for your distribution
The OBS Linux installation guide recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and documents a PPA and apt route for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. That guide was published in 2021, so check the current OBS page and your distribution’s packaging guidance before installing. OBS Project: Linux installation

OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its basic Linux/Unix requirements. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee smooth streaming: encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, scenes and game load all affect performance. OBS system requirements
Choose a capture source and verify it
- In OBS, create a scene for the game.
- Under Sources, add Display Capture or Window Capture, the documented Linux options, and select the display or game window you need.
- Check the OBS preview while the game is running. Choose the least intrusive source that captures the game correctly; behavior may vary by game and desktop session.
- Check the Audio Mixer. If the desktop or microphone meters do not move when they should, configure the corresponding audio source and test again.
OBS’s Quick Start identifies Game Capture as Windows-only; do not expect that source to be available as the Linux gameplay-capture path. OBS Project: Quick Start
Choose local recording, YouTube archiving, or both
| Option | What it keeps | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS local recording | A file saved on your computer | A full-session backup you control | Uses local storage; configure the recording path and confirm the file is growing during the session. |
| YouTube live archive | A VOD associated with the broadcast in YouTube Studio | Convenient viewing after the stream | Streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on it as the sole copy for a longer session. |
| OBS Replay Buffer | A recent segment saved when you trigger its hotkey | Clips of notable moments during gameplay | It is not a full-session recording or a YouTube VOD rerun. |
For a local backup, set the recording path in OBS’s recording settings, start recording, and verify that the file size increases. For short clips, enable Replay Buffer in OBS settings and assign a save hotkey. OBS’s overview documents recording-path and Replay Buffer options. OBS Project: OBS Studio overview

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
Check channel eligibility and create the stream
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Encoder streaming is a standard route for gameplay. Review YouTube’s current eligibility details if you cannot start a live stream. YouTube Help: live streaming eligibility
Copy the stream URL and key into OBS
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder or stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or the available custom-service option, and enter the server URL and stream key in the matching fields. OBS labels can vary by version.
- Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live settings and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the Live Control Room preview and check video and audio before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, and confirming that a local recording is growing if you are making one. YouTube Help: create a live stream with an encoder
Set video quality and encoder settings
YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The suitable resolution, frame rate and bitrate depend on the upload connection, encoder and content. Fast, detailed gameplay can be more demanding than a static scene, so test with representative motion and audio rather than assuming the highest quality will be reliable. - Protocol: Use RTMP or RTMPS as supported by the encoder setup.
- Rate control: Set CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; never use more than four seconds.
- Resolution, frame rate and bitrate: Choose a combination your connection and computer can sustain. There is no single bitrate that is right for every game and output format.
- Test: Run a private or unlisted test with similar gameplay movement and audio. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and check OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload.
End the broadcast and find its VOD
- When finished, stop the stream in OBS and end the broadcast in Live Control Room if prompted.
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the Live tab to find the completed stream.
- Review the archive and adjust its visibility or delete it in Studio if needed.
- For an important session, confirm that the local recording is intact before deleting or moving the only backup.
YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; a longer broadcast may not be captured at all. Splitting a long session into shorter broadcasts and maintaining a local recording reduces dependence on one archive. YouTube Help: archive live streams
Troubleshooting common problems
The game is missing or black in the preview
- Confirm that the source is Display Capture or Window Capture and that it targets the right display or window.
- Check the preview with the game open; source behavior can differ by game and desktop setup.
- Try the other documented capture source if it better fits the game and session.
There is no game audio or microphone audio
- Watch the Audio Mixer while game sound plays and while speaking into the microphone.
- If the relevant meter does not move, configure or add the appropriate desktop-audio or microphone source, then test again before going live.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
- Check that OBS has the correct server URL and current stream key from the same YouTube stream.
- Verify the channel is eligible to stream and check the Live Control Room for preview or connection status.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace the saved key in OBS.
The stream stutters or OBS reports performance trouble
- Test at a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate and compare stream health during representative gameplay.
- Check both network upload stability and local encoding load; a faster connection alone cannot resolve an overloaded encoder.
- Reduce scene complexity or game load if the computer cannot encode reliably at the selected output settings.
The VOD is missing after a long broadcast
Check YouTube Studio’s Live content and the archive visibility. If the broadcast exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have been captured. Use the OBS local recording if enabled; for future sessions, keep broadcasts under the archive limit or split long events and retain local files.
A Replay Buffer clip is not the full stream
Replay Buffer saves a recent segment when its hotkey is pressed. Use OBS recording for a full local session and YouTube’s live archive for the post-stream VOD.

Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; the first day is one free day per account.
Every slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. Copyright and channel-policy checks for gaming VODs
Before streaming or keeping an archive public, check that you have the rights or permissions needed for the game footage, music and other material in the broadcast. Game soundtracks and background music can trigger copyright claims even when the gameplay is yours. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help you review common risks: copyright safety checklist.
Archiving a stream does not by itself establish that its content complies with YouTube rules or qualifies for monetization. Make the VOD meaningfully your own where appropriate—such as with commentary or original analysis—and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies rather than assuming that a live broadcast is automatically safe to reuse or monetize.
