Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start with the exact error in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with your encoder logs and local output. “Dropped frames” can mean frames were lost or duplicated by encoder timing, the encoder could not produce them fast enough, or the server could not deliver video steadily to YouTube. Those causes need different fixes; Hetzner hosting alone does not identify which one is responsible.
1. Capture evidence before changing settings
Record observations during a representative period, including the time when drops occur. For a 24/7 stream, a brief spot check can miss recurring CPU or network spikes, source interruptions, or encoder restarts. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a fix helped.

- Copy the exact YouTube Live Control Room health message and its timestamp. The Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent to YouTube, and unresolved errors can continue appearing.
- Save the full encoder command or configuration, encoder version, and logs around the same timestamps.
- Record the configured resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec.
- Check CPU utilization and load, memory pressure if available, network throughput and errors, and whether the local output or archive is healthy and continuing to grow.
- Note the Hetzner product family, server location, public network setup, and traffic usage shown in your account.
These details help separate a configuration warning from a real-time performance or delivery problem. The exact health text matters more than the general phrase “dropped frames.”

Check the source and local encoder output
Inspect the video that the encoder produces, including a local archive if one is enabled. If the local output is already choppy, incomplete, or stopping, the problem occurs before YouTube receives the stream. Investigate the source feed, capture or decoding chain, host CPU contention, and encoding workload. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking encoder CPU load and local archive problems.

Compare local output with YouTube health
If the local output looks healthy but YouTube reports that it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, focus on delivery to the ingest endpoint. Measure sustained upload throughput and its variability from the server; a single speed-test peak does not show whether the connection can deliver the stream consistently. Also inspect network errors and connectivity to the actual YouTube ingest endpoint. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies outbound internet strength as a check when the stream looks and sounds healthy locally.
If viewers on different connections report the same interruption while the local output remains clean, that is another reason to investigate the outbound path and YouTube’s health indicator rather than assuming every viewer has a local playback issue.
3. Match the encoder to YouTube’s stream profile
Use the exact settings selected for the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the listed RTMP/RTMPS configuration includes H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. The appropriate bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate; choose a quality that the available connection can deliver reliably.

Read the specific error message before changing anything. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance calls out codec and format, bitrate, video settings, and keyframe frequency as separate error categories. It also says that a non-variable-resolution stream must use the bitrate for the selected resolution shown in Ingestion Settings, and suggests lowering resolution if bandwidth is insufficient. Follow the profile and message shown for your stream rather than copying settings from a different ingest mode or codec configuration.
- Bitrate or bandwidth warning: Compare the encoder’s actual bitrate with the value required for the selected resolution and the server’s sustained outbound capacity. If the connection cannot support it reliably, test a lower bitrate or resolution.
- Keyframe warning: Set the keyframe interval to YouTube’s recommended two seconds and keep it at or below four seconds.
- Codec or format warning: Confirm that the encoder’s video and audio codecs match the selected YouTube ingest configuration.
- Frame-rate or video-setting warning: Confirm that the output resolution and frame rate agree with the settings selected in Live Control Room.
After a change, watch the health indicator for the same message and check the local output. A healthy dashboard does not by itself prove that every part of a 24/7 pipeline will remain healthy indefinitely.
4. Inspect FFmpeg timing and real-time performance
With FFmpeg, retain the complete command and version alongside the logs. Check the input timestamps, whether the input is a file or a live source, output frame-rate mode, filter workload, and whether the process keeps pace in real time. A fast-looking command or a high average CPU figure alone does not show whether individual frames are being processed and delivered on time.

FFmpeg’s documented -fps_mode behavior is important: cfr duplicates or drops frames to achieve exactly the requested constant frame rate; vfr passes timestamps while dropping frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. Therefore, a log or output that shows frame drops is not automatically evidence of a Hetzner network fault. Determine whether the encoder is intentionally adjusting timestamps or cannot keep up.

Do not blindly add -re, change frame-rate modes, or raise a frame-drop threshold. FFmpeg’s -re/-readrate controls input reading. Its documentation cautions against a low read rate with an actual capture device or live input because packet loss can result. First establish whether the source is a file being replayed, live capture or network input, or an already paced feed; then use timing options appropriate to that pipeline.
5. Check the Hetzner plan and server under real load
Identify whether the stream runs on Hetzner Cloud or a dedicated server, then check the exact product family, location, network setup, and account traffic counter. Hetzner’s published included-traffic figures vary by product and region. For example, its traffic documentation lists 20 TB for EU Cloud entries in the CX, CPX, and CAX families; that figure applies to those listed entries, not every Hetzner server or location. Verify the current terms for your actual plan. Included monthly traffic is not a guaranteed per-instance bitrate and, by itself, does not establish the cause of frame drops.

Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines hosted on physical servers and distinguishes shared-resource and dedicated-resource classes. If CPU saturation or inconsistent performance lines up with the drop timestamps, compare observed workload with the selected resource class and test an appropriate capacity change. Do not infer that a server is suitable for a particular encode just from its product name. Hetzner’s Cloud overview also says public internet connectivity requires a Primary IP.
Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement states a commercially reasonable effort toward 99.9% monthly server availability, subject to its definitions and exclusions. That is an availability statement about server operation, not a guarantee of continuous YouTube ingest, frame-perfect encoding, or end-to-end stream quality.

Local output is already choppy and CPU is saturated
Reduce encoding complexity, resolution, or frame rate as appropriate, or test server resources better suited to the measured workload. Keep the source and other settings unchanged where possible while testing. There is no universally correct FFmpeg preset or server size without the command, codec, and hardware details.
Local output is clean but YouTube health or outbound measurements are poor
Investigate sustained egress, network errors, route or connectivity, and the configured YouTube ingest endpoint. If available capacity is inadequate, test a lower bitrate or resolution that YouTube accepts for the selected profile. Recheck local output and YouTube health after the change.
Drops coincide with traffic usage or a plan constraint
Confirm the exact product, region, current traffic allowance, and account usage before considering a plan change or contacting Hetzner support. A published allowance table does not prove that a traffic policy caused a particular frame drop.

Follow YouTube’s advice to update the encoder and, if needed, test a different encoder. Keep the same source and stream settings where possible to isolate software behavior. For a production 24/7 channel, prepare a fallback or restart plan before changing the only live encoder.
7. Make changes safely on a 24/7 channel
Evaluate remedies against the measured cause: source or timing, CPU and encode capacity, outbound delivery, or a verified plan constraint. Also consider whether the change reduces resolution or frame rate, whether you can reverse it without disrupting the only stream, and what recurring cost or operational work it adds. These are practical decision criteria, not thresholds set by YouTube or Hetzner.
- Save the current configuration and the evidence collected at the affected timestamps.
- Change one relevant setting or resource at a time, preferably during a planned maintenance window or with a tested fallback available.
- Observe the same local output, logs, YouTube health message, CPU, and network measures that showed the original fault.
- Keep the change only if the evidence improves without creating a new quality or stability problem.
