For replaying prerecorded gaming VODs continuously on YouTube, a managed rerun service is usually simpler; OBS on a VPS is the better fit when you need hands-on control of scenes, plugins, inputs, or server configuration. Neither is universally cheaper or more reliable. Compare each service’s current limits and price with a VPS quote that includes compute, storage, bandwidth, encoding capability, and the time you will spend operating it.
What these two approaches actually do
A gaming VOD rerun takes previously recorded gameplay and sends it to YouTube as a live encoder feed. YouTube supports encoder-based gameplay streams, including overlays and external audio or camera hardware; a prerecorded loop is still subject to YouTube’s content rules.
A managed rerun service handles the cloud playback or OBS environment for you. With OBS on a VPS, you rent a server, configure OBS and the media playback workflow, and take responsibility for keeping the stream running. The comparison is between operating models, not two fixed technical specifications: VPS performance depends on the server you choose, while managed services vary in their supported inputs, output, storage, and controls.

A managed example: Cloud-OBS
Cloud-OBS describes a hosted OBS setup for ordered playback of uploaded videos, with browser controls to upload and reorder files, pause, resume, or skip. Its page also describes remote desktop access for reviewing OBS scenes and settings, and onboarding handled with the provider. These are vendor-stated features, not an independent uptime assessment.

The Cloud-OBS page describes the initial offer as limited to the first three activations and says there is no lock-in; it also says a spot is reserved after setup confirmation. Availability and prices can change, so confirm the live terms with the provider before signing up. The service says the channel owner remains responsible for content and rights, including music, and that continuous streaming does not guarantee audience or visibility.
This is one hosted-OBS example, not a template for every rerun service. Check whether a plan offers a full remote OBS desktop or simpler video playout, what media inputs it accepts, how much storage it includes, and how many destinations it can configure.

What OBS on a VPS requires
“A VPS with OBS” does not specify a server provider, processor, graphics hardware, network allowance, operating system, or encoder. Those choices determine whether a particular workload is viable. Get a current quote and confirm that the plan supports your intended persistent workload and encoding method; do not assume a generic VPS can encode 1080p60.
Operational responsibilities
- Install and configure OBS, then set up a dependable way to play the VODs in the intended order.
- Provide enough storage for the media and sufficient outbound network capacity for the stream.
- Keep OBS and the server process running, and decide how you will detect and recover from disconnects.
- Monitor the live output and troubleshoot server, encoder, and YouTube ingest problems.
These are practical consequences of self-managing the server, not measured comparisons of uptime or support burden. A VPS can suit a technically confident operator who values control; the administration work is part of the trade-off.

YouTube encoder settings to compare against either option
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the technical baseline, whether a service handles the encoder or you configure OBS yourself. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its current guide lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps; it recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Example: 1080p60 using H.264
YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p60 H.264. That is YouTube’s published guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or managed plan can sustain the output. Check the actual service specification or server capacity, and choose a quality that can be delivered reliably.

Stream key and channel limits
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in the encoder or service’s destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube’s live-stream documentation says a channel can have up to ten active streams and a stream key up to three active streams; see YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance. The same documentation says live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

A feed reaching YouTube successfully does not mean every video is permitted, or that a channel will qualify for monetization. You remain responsible for rights to gameplay footage, music, overlays, and any other material. YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service still apply to encoder streams. Continuous playback alone also does not establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements. Review the current YouTube rules for your channel and make sure the stream adds value rather than relying on repetition as a substitute for rights or policy compliance.
Compare total cost and capacity, not just the headline price
For a managed service, check the recurring charge, storage allowance, output quality, destination count, input types, and any setup or onboarding conditions. For a VPS, price the compute and storage you actually need, outbound bandwidth, any GPU or encoding requirement, and the time required to maintain and recover the stream. The available information does not establish a like-for-like VPS price or prove that either approach is generally cheaper.
Before committing, compare the service’s stated output with YouTube’s bitrate guidance and your desired resolution and frame rate. “Always on” is not the same as delivering the quality you want reliably. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate; its encoder settings guide is the place to check current technical recommendations.
