Use OBS when you want to send a gaming rerun to YouTube from a computer you manage; use a hosted playlist app when you want prerecorded videos scheduled to run without keeping your computer on. The YouTube stream-key workflow works with either approach, but the machine, scheduling and operational responsibilities differ. Neither method grants rights to game footage or music, and neither guarantees monetization.
OBS or a hosted playlist app: what changes?
OBS is a local encoder: it sends your stream to YouTube from your own computer, and you manage the files, internet connection and stream state there. A hosted playlist service runs the scheduled playback on its infrastructure instead. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams, while Restream documents how to build and automatically schedule a playlist.

| Decision | OBS / local encoder | Hosted playlist service |
|---|---|---|
| Where playback runs | On your computer, which sends the stream to YouTube using an encoder connection. YouTube Help: create a live stream with an encoder. | On the hosted service’s infrastructure. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud option for continuous prerecorded streams; Restream documents scheduled playlist streaming. |
| Must your computer stay on? | Yes, for this local workflow: the computer running the encoder must remain available while it streams. | No for the documented hosted workflows: YouTube describes Gyre as not requiring a dedicated PC, and Restream says its scheduled playlist can run while the laptop is unplugged. |
| Playlist scheduling | You manage and operate the local streaming workflow. The guidance cited here does not establish a specific OBS playlist-automation setup. | Restream documents ordering videos into a playlist and scheduling it to go live automatically. Its help article, dated July 25, 2026, states a maximum playlist duration of 24 hours; that is a Restream-documented limit, not a YouTube-wide limit. |
| Archive | YouTube’s automatic archive caveat applies. | The same YouTube archive caveat applies; hosting does not change YouTube’s archive guidance. |
| Rights and monetization | The same game, music, originality and reused-content policies apply. | The same policies apply. A hosted service does not grant rights to your video or audio. |
This is a comparison of who operates the stream and how scheduling works, not a reliability ranking. No comparative outage or stress-test results are established here.
Choose the workflow that fits your setup
Choose OBS if you want local control
A local encoder is a fit if you want to operate the broadcast from your own computer and are prepared to keep that setup and its connection running. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports streaming gameplay and explains connecting an encoder with the stream URL and key.

Set up an OBS stream to YouTube
Exact OBS menu names and encoder controls can vary by version. The essential workflow is to configure OBS to send the source you want to broadcast to the YouTube stream URL using your stream key, then start streaming from OBS. YouTube’s setup timing and connection details are documented in its encoder guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Enable live streaming on your channel. If this is the first time you enable it, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a planned rerun.
- Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the server/stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to stream to your channel.
- Configure OBS to send the stream to YouTube. In OBS, select the YouTube service if available, or enter the stream URL and key using the custom server option. Add the gameplay recording or other intended media source to the scene. The cited YouTube guidance establishes the URL-and-key connection, but does not prescribe OBS-specific resolution, bitrate, keyframe or codec values; use YouTube’s current recommendations and the settings appropriate to your source and connection.
- Check the live preview before going public. Confirm YouTube receives the intended video and audio, the correct stream is selected, and the broadcast visibility and start time are what you intend.
- Start streaming in OBS and monitor the broadcast. The local workflow depends on the computer, files and internet connection remaining available. If the stream stops, check that setup and YouTube’s live control room before restarting.
Plan for archives before running a long stream
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The guidance was current when accessed October 3, 2026. If you need a replay, retain the source files or make a separate local backup rather than relying on YouTube’s archive for a long rerun. This applies whether the stream is sent by OBS or a hosted service.

Check game, music and monetization rights
Confirm the game publisher’s commercial-use terms
YouTube says commercial use of video-game content depends on the rights granted by the relevant publisher. Its guidance warns: “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” Commentary tied to gameplay with instructional or educational value is described as a potentially monetizable case, not a guarantee. Check the publisher’s terms for the specific game; a general streaming setup cannot establish your rights.
Clear music and other third-party audio
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have necessary rights for livestream content, including music licensing rights. Game soundtracks, background music and other third-party audio may need separate clearance. Do not assume that permission to show gameplay also covers its soundtrack.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Do not treat a rerun as automatically monetizable
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams. They require original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible, and reused content is evaluated separately from copyright enforcement. Owning a recording or having permission to broadcast it does not by itself guarantee monetization eligibility. YouTube noted a policy clarification on July 15, 2025.
