If FFmpeg is still running but YouTube has stopped receiving a usable stream, the process being alive does not prove the publishing connection is healthy. Compare FFmpeg’s stderr with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then check the destination, RTMPS/TLS setup, encoder settings and network path one at a time. The fact that the server is in India is not, by itself, evidence that its location caused the disconnect.
What a running FFmpeg process does—and does not—tell you
FFmpeg can remain active after its output connection has failed or stopped delivering video to YouTube. Treat the process status, FFmpeg’s output log and YouTube’s stream-health status as separate evidence. A process that has not exited is not proof that YouTube is receiving frames.

The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Possibilities include an incorrect or stale ingest URL or stream key, a protocol or TLS mismatch, outbound connectivity trouble, unsuitable encoder settings, or a YouTube stream-state issue. The logs and health messages should narrow the fault to a layer before you change configuration.

Capture the failure before changing settings
Save the complete FFmpeg command line and stderr around the time YouTube stopped receiving the stream. FFmpeg’s
-reportoption writes the command line and log output to a timestamped report file; increase detail with-loglevelwhen needed. Verify the YouTube destination and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and stream key for the intended live stream. Check that the configured server URL is copied correctly and that the key is current, without a malformed path or accidental characters. YouTube’s encoder setup uses the stream URL and key as the encoder’s server and key values: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Check RTMPS transport details
If the destination uses RTMPS, validate the exact URL scheme, ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, TLS support, and hostname/SNI behavior from the VM. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes that a timeout can occur if an encoder attempts cleartext RTMP against an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Do not switch protocols or edit the URL by guesswork; compare the configured destination with YouTube’s documented requirements: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP in its live encoder settings guidance.

Validate encoder settings and sustained upload capacity
Compare the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its listed recommended bitrates include 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not measurements of a particular VM or route. Check the full table for the selected format and monitor stream health while testing.

Test the VM’s route to the configured ingest host
From the server, check DNS resolution and outbound reachability to the exact configured hostname and port. Note whether failures coincide with a VM restart, route change, resource contention or a provider/network event. Comparing a second route can be useful as a diagnostic control, but a single comparison does not establish a general problem with Indian cloud hosting.

Use provider-specific diagnostics cautiously
Google Cloud Live Stream API troubleshooting lists issues such as an invalid endpoint URI, an inactive channel, a duplicate encoder connection and disallowed source IP ranges. Those checks may be useful analogies when diagnosing a managed ingest service, but they describe that API and are not proof of why YouTube rejected a particular FFmpeg stream. How to interpret the evidence

FFmpeg documents protocol timeout and reconnect options, but these are not a substitute for identifying the failure. Reconnect behavior depends on the protocol and command configuration; consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and preserve the original error before adding options. Does the Indian server location cause it?
Not on the evidence in this symptom alone. A routing issue, provider event or egress restriction is possible, but location is a hypothesis until DNS, reachability, route behavior or repeatable provider-specific evidence supports it. The available official guidance does not establish an India-specific YouTube ingest outage or a general defect in Indian cloud servers.

If considering another host or region, compare observed stability to the actual configured ingest endpoint, RTMPS/TLS support, documented egress capabilities, and whether the problem reproduces across time or routes. No provider can be ranked as the right fix without those observations.
