YouTube app bug opens and auto-plays Shorts by default, here’s how to fix it

A growing number of viewers have reported a YouTube app bug where the app reopens and immediately starts playing Shorts. In many cases, it happens even when you didn’t tap anything, and it can feel random—until you notice a pattern tied to your feed state, history, or a cached session.

This guide walks through practical fixes you can try in order, from the least disruptive (changing specific YouTube settings) to the most effective (clearing cache/data or reinstalling). You’ll also get workarounds when the problem returns after an update.

What this bug looks like (and why it happens)

You might open YouTube and see a Shorts clip begin autoplaying without pressing play. Then, if you leave the app and return, the same behavior repeats—sometimes with the Shorts you last watched, sometimes with whatever the algorithm decides you’ll engage with next.

  • Feed/session mismatch after an update or device sleep/wake cycle.
  • Algorithmic autoplay triggers driven by your Shorts watching signals and the Home feed ranking.
  • Background refresh reloading the Home feed as soon as the app launches.

The fixes below reduce or reset those signals and cached states.

Before you change anything: quick checks

Spend 60 seconds ruling out the easy stuff. These checks often stop the autoplay loop without deeper troubleshooting.

  • Check for an app update: open the App Store or Google Play and update YouTube to the latest version available.
  • Restart your device: a full reboot clears stuck network/session states that can affect feed load behavior.
  • Confirm your YouTube version: note the version number in the app settings (useful later if you need to report the bug).
  • Test on mobile data vs Wi‑Fi: if it behaves differently, the issue may be tied to connection/session behavior.

Fixes on iPhone and iPad (iOS)

On iOS, the most effective fixes usually involve restarting the app, resetting background behavior, and—if needed—offloading or reinstalling YouTube.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Force-quit YouTube and reopen

Sometimes the Shorts autoplay is a stuck playback session.

  1. Swipe up from the bottom (or double-press Home on older devices) to open App Switcher.
  2. Swipe YouTube off the screen to force-quit.
  3. Open YouTube again and check whether it still auto-plays Shorts.

2) Disable YouTube background refresh (iOS)

Background refresh can reload your Home feed immediately when the app launches, which can trigger Shorts autoplay.

  1. Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  2. Find YouTube.
  3. Turn Off background refresh for YouTube.
  4. Reopen YouTube and test for autoplay.

3) Reset YouTube app by offloading (safe) or deleting (strong)

iOS doesn’t always provide a “clear cache” button for apps. Offloading is a middle ground; deleting/reinstalling is the most thorough.

  1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage).
  2. Select YouTube.
  3. Try Offload App first, then reopen YouTube to force a fresh install of app binaries.
  4. If the issue persists, tap Delete App and reinstall YouTube from the App Store.

4) Sign out and back in (if the app keeps reloading the same Shorts state)

This can flush certain session tokens that influence feed behavior.

Fixes on Android

Android tends to give you more control through cache/data resets. Use the least disruptive method first.

1) Force stop YouTube

This resets the current playback state.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > YouTube.
  2. Tap Force stop.
  3. Reopen YouTube and check if Shorts autoplay on launch.

2) Clear cache (recommended first)

Clearing cache removes cached session/feed content without removing your account login.

  1. Settings > Apps > YouTube.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Tap Clear cache.
  4. Reopen YouTube and test.

3) Clear storage/data (most effective, but may require re-login)

This is the “reset YouTube app” step. It can fix stubborn autoplay loops after updates.

  1. Settings > Apps > YouTube.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Tap Clear storage (or Clear data).
  4. Reopen YouTube and sign back in.

4) Disable background data / battery optimization (varies by brand)

When background activity refreshes the Home feed on launch, Shorts autoplay can trigger again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > YouTube.
  2. Find Mobile data or Data usage.
  3. Turn off Background data (or set to Restricted).
  4. Then search for Battery > Battery optimization.
  5. Set YouTube to Don’t optimize (or equivalent).

5) Reinstall YouTube

If clearing cache/data doesn’t help, reinstalling forces a clean app session.

  1. Uninstall YouTube.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Install the latest YouTube from Google Play.

Fixes on desktop (macOS/Windows)

If the bug affects your “open YouTube” experience on desktop (autoplaying Shorts elements or starting playback when you return), use the browser-side controls and reset extensions.

1) Disable autoplay in browser (when available)

Use your browser’s autoplay settings. Different browsers label this differently, but it’s commonly under Site Settings or Privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open browser settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Go to Site data or Cookies and site data.
  3. Search for youtube.com.
  4. Remove site data for youtube.com and reload the page.

3) Test with extensions disabled

Ad blockers, autoplay blockers, and script managers can sometimes interfere with YouTube’s player state.

  1. Open your extensions list.
  2. Disable extensions temporarily.
  3. Reload YouTube and test autoplay behavior.

Control Short autoplay behavior inside YouTube

Depending on your app version and region, YouTube may not offer a single “turn off Shorts autoplay forever” switch. Still, you can reduce the conditions that cause immediate Shorts starts.

1) Turn off or reduce personalized recommendations (where available)

If your Home feed is heavily influenced by Shorts, the app will naturally push them first when it reloads.

  1. Open YouTube.
  2. Tap profile picture > Settings.
  3. Look for Privacy or Recommendations.
  4. Adjust any options that reduce personalization (labels vary by version).

2) Pause watch history and/or clear Shorts watch signal

Shorts autoplay loops often correlate with fresh Shorts watch history. Pausing history prevents further signal accumulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open YouTube.
  2. Go to profile picture > Your data in YouTube (or similar).
  3. Find Watch history.
  4. Tap Pause.
  5. Optional: clear watch history for a fresh start.

On some accounts, history controls are managed at the account level in Google settings.

3) Use a different feed starting point

If the problem triggers from the Home feed, switch what opens first. Some users report that starting on Subscriptions or Library reduces Shorts-first launches.

  3. Close the app and reopen it.
  4. If the behavior changes, make that feed your routine until the bug is fixed.

Workarounds if the autoplay keeps coming back

If fixes stop the issue temporarily but it returns after a few hours or after an update, use a workaround that prevents the app from reaching the autoplay state immediately.

1) Open to a non-Shorts tab first, then switch

Open Library or Subscriptions first, then manually go to Home. This gives the app a chance to load a different initial content state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) Reduce immediate feed refresh

On iOS, disabling Background App Refresh is the most direct. On Android, restrict background data for YouTube or adjust battery optimization.

3) Avoid “Resume playback” moments

If you recently opened YouTube while a Shorts clip was mid-play, the app may try to “resume” when you launch again. Try force-closing YouTube after you exit a session (instead of letting it background), then reopen.

4) Test a different account (sanity check)

If your main account is heavily Shorts-driven, the personalized algorithm might repeatedly select Shorts as the first item.

  1. Switch YouTube accounts (profile icon > manage accounts).
  2. Log into a secondary account (if you have one).
  3. Open YouTube and test whether Shorts autoplay on launch happens there too.

If it only happens on one account, watch-history signals are likely involved.

1) Gather the essentials

  • Device model (e.g., iPhone 13, Samsung Galaxy S23)
  • OS version (e.g., iOS 17.5.x, Android 14)
  • YouTube app version (from app settings)
  • Network (Wi‑Fi or mobile data)
  • Reproduction steps (open app, see Shorts autoplay, exit, reopen, repeat)

2) Use the in-app feedback tool

Inside YouTube, look for Help or Send feedback (often under Settings). Describe that the app opens and auto-plays Shorts by default, including whether it happens after updates or after backgrounding.

3) Check official status and known issues

If a rollout is active, it may affect specific app versions. Monitor release notes and community reports. If your YouTube version is older, updating is often the fastest correction.

Common mistakes that make it worse

  • Only reinstalling without clearing playback cues: reinstall helps, but if background refresh keeps reloading the Home feed instantly, the autoplay may return.
  • Clearing data repeatedly: doing this too often can cause more inconsistent feed state. Cache/data clears are best used once, then test.
  • Ignoring device-level battery restrictions: aggressive battery modes can create odd pause/resume states that look like autoplay bugs.
  • Not checking updates: a bug sometimes gets fixed silently in later YouTube builds.

FAQs

Does turning off watch history stop Shorts autoplay?

It can reduce how strongly Shorts are recommended first, but it won’t always eliminate the immediate autoplay trigger. In many cases, it works best combined with clearing cache/data or disabling background refresh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does it happen more after updates?

App updates can change feed ranking logic and cached player state handling. If the app has outdated cached session data, the first load after update may pick a Shorts clip and start playback immediately.

Will clearing storage delete my YouTube account?

Clearing storage on Android typically doesn’t delete your Google account, but it can sign you out of the YouTube app or reset local preferences. Expect to log back in.

Can I fully disable Shorts autoplay?

There isn’t always a single universal toggle for “disable Shorts autoplay on open” across all app versions. The most reliable approach is to prevent autoplay triggers (cache/session resets, background refresh/data restrictions) and reduce personalized Shorts-first feed selection (watch history and recommendations controls).

Is this only a mobile issue?

Mostly, but desktop browsers can also show similar autoplay-like behavior tied to site cookies, extensions, and autoplay policies. Clearing youtube.com cookies and disabling extensions are common fixes on macOS and Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

If the YouTube app bug is auto-playing Shorts when you reopen it, start with the quick wins: update the app, force-quit, and disable YouTube background refresh/data. If that doesn’t stick, clear cache/data (Android) or offload/reinstall (iOS), then test again with the Home feed behaviors reduced.

When the issue persists across multiple resets, collect your device/OS/YouTube version and report it through YouTube’s feedback tool. Bugs tied to cached playback and feed session state are usually fixable once the rollout version is identified.
