For a cautious first test on an older PC, use OBS with Intel Quick Sync H.264, 1280×720 output at 30 fps, CBR, an 8,000 Kbps video bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. These are YouTube-aligned starting settings—not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can stay live continuously. Check that Quick Sync is actually available in OBS, then test the full setup with your real content and connection before relying on it.

This baseline pairs YouTube’s published 720p H.264 bitrate recommendation with a conservative frame rate for an older machine. The 30 fps choice is a practical testing recommendation, not a YouTube requirement.

The bitrate is for video. Leave upload headroom for audio and protocol overhead; YouTube does not specify one universal overhead percentage. These settings concern YouTube’s H.264 live ingestion recommendations, not another platform’s settings.

Having an Intel processor does not by itself prove that Quick Sync will be usable in OBS. OBS Project documents QSV support on Windows and Linux for Intel HD Graphics with Core i-series 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer, and recommends Core i-series 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV generations had lower quality. These are compatibility guidelines, not a guarantee for every PC, driver, operating system, or OBS build.

- Open OBS and inspect the encoder choices in its output settings.
- If Intel Quick Sync H.264 is listed, select it for the test profile.
- If it is missing, check the processor and integrated graphics capability, graphics driver, operating system, and OBS configuration. Intel says an encoder missing from OBS’s dropdown is unavailable to that hardware configuration; do not assume it will work just because the CPU is Intel.
OBS notes that hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, while older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. Which trade-off is preferable depends on the machine, the content, and the actual sustained test.
Match the output to YouTube’s H.264 guidance
YouTube’s official live-encoder table gives these H.264 minimum and recommended video bitrates. They are ingestion recommendations, not proof that an older PC or connection can sustain the selected setting.

For an older PC, these figures are a way to choose a realistic test target—not a reason to push resolution higher. In particular, the current YouTube table recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60, rather than the lower figures sometimes repeated in general guides.

Audio and picture parameters
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz stereo sampling, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Its picture guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR. OBS may expose different options depending on encoder and version, and an older hardware encoder may not offer every control. Use the relevant options that are available rather than assuming every parameter exists on your system.
Use RTMPS and protect the stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for live ingestion. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration; keep the key private, since someone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Labels and page layout can change, so follow the current YouTube Studio controls rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
Test the connection and the actual workload
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection the PC will use. A single result is only a snapshot; it cannot establish all-day stability.
- Set the bitrate and output profile, then make a representative test stream. Include audio and movement similar to what the channel will actually show.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s connection or dropped-frame indicators during the test. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers.
- For a 24/7 plan, extend the test and monitor OBS encoder warnings, dropped frames, YouTube stream health, PC temperatures or shutdowns, and internet interruptions. No cited setup guidance establishes a universal runtime guarantee.
Diagnose instability by its symptom
OBS reports dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS explains that increasing dropped frames with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Test connection stability and reduce the bitrate if the line cannot sustain it; a faster upload-speed result alone does not rule out interruptions.

The encoder cannot keep up
An encoder overload points to encoding workload rather than the same network problem as connection-side dropped frames. Reduce demands systematically. If you are above 30 fps, try 30 fps first; Intel specifically recommends lowering frame rate when frames continue dropping. If stability remains poor, reduce resolution and bitrate together, then retest the actual scene and audio.

If QSV is missing from the encoder list, verify that the graphics hardware, driver, operating system, and OBS configuration expose it; Intel’s guidance is that a missing dropdown option is unavailable to that configuration. If QSV is available but image quality is not acceptable, compare an alternative encoder only through a representative test at the same target conditions. Earlier hardware-encoding generations can trade image quality for lower system impact, so there is no universally best encoder without knowing the workload and PC.
