There is no universal cheaper option: a Mac mini’s electricity cost depends on its average power draw and your electricity tariff, while a VPS cost depends on a plan capable of sustaining your chosen stream, plus any storage or data-transfer charges. Apple’s published power figures are reference points, not measurements of a Mac mini encoding a YouTube stream. Compare the costs only after defining what each total includes.
How to calculate a Mac mini’s 24/7 electricity cost
Use average power at the wall, measured while the machine is doing the work you intend to run. Then apply your local electricity price:

- Monthly energy (kWh) = average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the billing period.
- Monthly electricity cost = monthly energy (kWh) × your price per kWh.
For a 30-day month, 4 W continuously uses 2.88 kWh; 65 W continuously uses 46.8 kWh. These are arithmetic scenarios based on Apple’s published idle and maximum figures for the 2024 M4 Mac mini, not predicted streaming consumption. Multiply each by your own tariff to estimate the electricity component.
If you can, measure the complete setup at the wall during representative streaming. A plug-in energy meter is one way to obtain the wattage input; no particular meter is required. Include the display, network equipment, external storage, or other devices if they will also run continuously. If you do not measure, label the result as a scenario or bound, not your expected bill.

Apple’s published figures are model-specific
Apple lists 4 W idle and 65 W maximum for the 2024 M4 Mac mini, and 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for the 2023 M2 Mac mini. These figures describe different models and operating conditions; neither is a measured average for continuous YouTube encoding. Do not treat idle as a streaming estimate or transfer one model’s figures to another. See Apple’s Mac mini specifications.
What belongs in a VPS cost
Do not choose a VPS by its starting price alone. First establish that the plan can run your intended encoding software and sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Then record the plan’s region and recurring price, CPU, memory, storage, included outbound transfer, and overage terms. The available provider pricing examples do not establish which configuration can encode a particular stream continuously.

Example provider figures—and their limits
AWS Lightsail lists a Linux/Unix public-IPv4 VPS at $5 USD per month with 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs, a 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB of transfer. This is a price and specification example, not evidence that the entry plan can sustain video encoding at your chosen settings. Check the current plan and terms on the AWS Lightsail pricing page before relying on it.

The table is a framework, not a head-to-head benchmark: the available evidence does not establish comparable stream performance, uptime, or total cost. If you exclude the Mac’s purchase cost, home internet, backups, or maintenance, state that in your own calculation. Do not claim a break-even period without a purchase price, measured draw, local tariff, suitable VPS price, and comparison horizon.
Check stream settings before estimating feasibility
The encoder settings affect the workload and sustained upload requirement, but they do not prove that a particular Mac mini or VPS can handle it. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. For H.264, examples include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube recommends CBR, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings for the resolution and frame rate you plan to use.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery from an encoder to YouTube. This is the ingest link, not the cost of sending video to viewers: YouTube says it transcodes live streams into viewer output formats. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health during the event. Neither the recommended settings nor YouTube’s transcoding establishes that a given VPS plan or home connection is suitable.

- Set the stream target. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current guidance; estimate the sustained upload requirement from the selected bitrate.
- Calculate the home electricity component. Measure average wall draw under a representative workload if possible, decide which associated devices to include, and multiply monthly kWh by your local tariff.
- Shortlist a VPS by capability, not headline price. Confirm the software and workload requirements, then record region, recurring price, CPU, memory, storage, included outbound transfer, and overage.
- Define the comparison boundary. Decide whether to include the Mac purchase price, home internet, backups, equipment, maintenance, or VPS add-ons. Use the same time period and scope on both sides.
- Test before committing to an always-on setup. Run representative content, check stream health, and confirm that the selected machine or VPS sustains the settings. The cited evidence does not provide a workload-matched VPS configuration or a Mac mini streaming benchmark.
