Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your YouTube stream will not start from OBS—or starts and then disconnects—identify which part is failing before changing settings or buying equipment. Check YouTube channel eligibility and the stream key first, then verify the RTMPS endpoint, separate encoder problems from network problems, and test one connection change at a time. IPv4-only can be worth testing in some cases, but there is no established India-wide ISP or IPv6 cause.
First identify where the failure occurs
“Not starting” can describe several different failures: YouTube may not yet allow the channel to go live; OBS may have an outdated key or incorrect server address; the connection may time out; the stream may begin but drop frames; or the computer may be struggling to encode. The error message, Live Control Room status, and local OBS preview help distinguish them.

- OBS fails immediately: check channel eligibility, the current stream key, the server URL, and RTMPS support.
- OBS connects but the stream repeatedly drops or shows network-dropped frames: investigate stable upload and the path between your computer and YouTube.
- The local preview or recording is also faulty, or CPU use is high: check OBS settings, sources, and computer performance before blaming the network.
OBS Project explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. That points to the connection path, but an immediate startup failure can have a different cause.
Check that YouTube allows this channel to go live
If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says initial live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube also requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days. These are account-side requirements: changing OBS’s bitrate, protocol, or network settings will not remove an eligibility restriction.

- Confirm that you are setting up the intended YouTube channel.
- Check that the channel is verified and eligible for live streaming.
- If you just enabled live streaming for the first time, allow the activation period before treating an OBS connection error as a network fault.
Refresh the stream key and verify the server address
For an encoder startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is to refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the current key. Treat the key as a password: do not share it publicly or show it in a screen recording.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Copy the current stream key shown for that stream or stream setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Confirm the service is YouTube, then paste the current key into the stream-key field. If your OBS version presents a YouTube account connection instead of a key field, follow the sign-in flow; YouTube directs account-sign-in problems to the software provider.
- Check the server address against the exact RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. Do not assume an older saved RTMP address is still the correct endpoint.
- Start the stream and watch Live Control Room for an incoming signal and any stream-health message.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies that both the protocol and server should be RTMPS. Google’s ingestion documentation requires port 443 and the server hostname for SNI authentication. Use the exact server address supplied by YouTube, including its hostname; an encoder must support RTMPS. If OBS or another encoder does not support the selected RTMPS endpoint, its connection may fail even when the key is correct.

Separate an encoder or computer fault from a network fault
Check the OBS preview and, if possible, make a short local recording using the same scenes and sources. Compare those with OBS’s connection or dropped-frame indicators and the messages in YouTube Live Control Room.

- Preview or recording is broken, stuttering, or missing sources: inspect scene and source configuration, encoder settings, and CPU load. A weak or overloaded computer can make the local output unreliable.
- Preview and recording look normal, but OBS reports connection drops or YouTube reports poor stream health: focus on stable upload and the outbound network route to YouTube.
- YouTube receives no signal at all: recheck eligibility, key, endpoint, protocol, and whether the encoder supports RTMPS before tuning bitrate.
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to the available connection and leaving upload headroom; its streaming tips recommend 20% room. That is guidance for planning, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. Test at the time and on the connection you will actually use for the stream.

Test upload capacity and OBS network settings
Use a stable upload measurement rather than download speed alone. Change one factor at a time and note whether OBS connects, whether YouTube receives a signal, and whether the stream stays stable. YouTube’s published H.264 figures are encoder bitrate recommendations, not minimum upload speeds or a promise that an ISP can sustain them.
| Output setting | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
Use YouTube’s full encoder-settings table for other resolutions and settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists CBR and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; it recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Make sure the selected encoder, resolution, and output settings match what your hardware and connection can sustain.

Lower bitrate as a diagnostic test
If stable upload is insufficient for your selected output, lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting diagnostic heuristic; it is not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stability. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, so avoid treating a speed-test result as bandwidth you can safely use in full.
Try a wired connection and check software interference
- Connect the computer to the router by Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN or security software is interfering with OBS’s connection. Change one setting at a time and restore protection and normal configuration after testing.
- In OBS network settings, keep Bind to IP at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- As a reversible test, try IP Family set to IPv4 Only. If it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
- On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report can help; they are not guaranteed fixes. Test them individually rather than changing several settings at once.
- Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality when the connection fluctuates, but it does not fix the underlying network problem.
If a change makes no difference or worsens the connection, put that setting back before moving to the next test. Restarting the modem or router may be reasonable when other signs point to a connectivity issue. Do not replace a router, network card, or cable unless a fault is indicated; if the fault is unclear, ask the ISP to help isolate it.

What IPv4 advice does—and does not—establish for India
PRISM Live Studio documents error 57998, “Failed to connect to the server,” for YouTube RTMP streaming in its app. Its support note says cases have been associated with IPv6 transition policies and ISP infrastructure changes in certain countries, and advises users in India and Indonesia to set IP Family to IPv4 Only, enable network optimizations, and restart PRISM. The note says IPv4 may help where IPv6 is unstable.
This is product-specific guidance for a documented PRISM app error. It does not establish that every Indian ISP blocks YouTube, that all Indian OBS users need IPv4-only, or that IPv6 is the cause of a particular OBS failure. OBS independently offers IPv4-only as a reversible troubleshooting option and recommends restoring the default IPv4/IPv6 setting if there is no improvement.
Run a short test before the 24/7 stream
Once OBS connects, test the stream before relying on it for a long broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what the real stream will contain. Watch the local preview, OBS connection indicators, and Live Control Room stream-health messages together. Record what changes when you switch between Wi-Fi and Ethernet, default and IPv4-only, or the original and a lower bitrate; this makes it easier to identify the factor that actually affects stability.
