Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your YouTube 24/7 stream stops after a few hours, the elapsed time alone does not identify the cause. Check the Live Control Room’s health indicator and timestamped errors first, then determine whether the encoder stopped producing a healthy feed or the feed stopped reaching YouTube. That evidence separates encoder, network, and ingestion problems—and points to the right fix.
Start with the error and the exact time of the drop
Before changing settings, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and record when the problem begins, the health-indicator text, and any error messages. YouTube’s error reference explains that messages carry timestamps and can recur while the issue remains unresolved. Red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause user problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. Read the actual message rather than assuming every interruption has the same cause. YouTube’s live-stream error messages

- Note whether viewers report an interruption or degraded picture or sound.
- Check whether the encoder process stopped, or whether it continued running but lost its connection to YouTube.
- Compare the reported time with encoder logs and, if available, local recording playback.
Find where the stream is failing
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance divides the investigation between encoder output and the outbound connection. If the feed is already broken or stopped on the computer, focus on the encoder, its sources, or the computer. If the local feed is healthy but YouTube reports trouble, investigate the connection and ingestion settings. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Update the encoder software, then inspect its output, error log, and CPU load around the drop time. Check that audio and video sources are still present and that local archive playback is intact. A stopped encoder, a source that disappears, or an unhealthy local recording points away from a YouTube timeout and toward the local setup or software support.

Outbound connection problem
If the encoder output looks and sounds normal locally, test the stability and strength of the outbound connection while streaming at the intended bitrate. YouTube recommends testing the connection and contacting the internet service provider if the test identifies internet problems. Trying a wired connection can help diagnose suspected Wi-Fi instability, but it is not a guaranteed fix or a YouTube requirement.
YouTube ingestion or configuration error
Match the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance and the connection’s reliable upload capacity. Use the Live Control Room error text to identify any specific ingestion issue; YouTube’s examples include an incorrect stream format. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Check the encoder settings that affect ingestion
YouTube’s guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in the current table rather than treating one value as universal.

| Setting or example | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps recommended bitrate |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps recommended bitrate |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
The bitrate figures above are encoder recommendations, not measured minimum internet speeds. Your connection needs stable outbound capacity for the configured stream; a nominal speed result alone does not establish that it can sustain that bitrate without interruption. Confirm that codec, resolution, and frame rate actually match the selected recommendation.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Prepare and test recovery before the next long broadcast
Run a realistic test before relying on a long broadcast, and monitor stream health during it. If you use a backup encoder, test failover: YouTube’s encoder tips describe stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable to see whether the player switches to the backup. Also confirm that a local archive file is growing and that its playback is usable. These are operational checks, not a complete prescribed architecture for 24/7 uptime. YouTube’s live-streaming tips
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive note; it does not establish that YouTube automatically ends a stream after a few hours, or explain a drop at any particular duration. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Common symptoms and what to try
| What you observe | Next check |
|---|---|
| The encoder stopped or local recording is broken | Review encoder logs, CPU load, software version, and audio/video sources; contact the encoder provider if its software integration appears to be involved. |
| Local output is healthy, but YouTube reports connection trouble | Test outbound stability at the intended bitrate; if the test shows internet issues, contact your ISP. A wired connection is a possible diagnostic change when Wi-Fi instability is suspected. |
| The health panel shows a specific error | Use its timestamp and wording to check the matching stream format or setting rather than changing unrelated settings. |
| The stream runs but picture or sound quality degrades | Check for yellow health warnings, then compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance. |
| The primary encoder fails during a long event | Test whether a backup encoder takes over and verify local archive growth before depending on the setup. |
