To restart a YouTube stream after a VPS reboot, configure the VPS to launch its encoder at boot, then verify that the encoder can still reach YouTube with the current stream URL and key. YouTube’s auto-start setting can start a broadcast when it receives an encoder feed; it does not restart an encoder process that stopped on the VPS.
Why the stream stays offline after a reboot
A reboot stops running processes. If your encoder was started manually in a terminal or shell session, it may not come back when the VPS starts. You need a boot-enabled service manager configuration on the VPS, plus a working encoder command and valid YouTube ingest credentials.

These are separate checks: the VPS must launch the encoder, and the encoder must send a valid feed that YouTube can receive. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address that identifies where the encoder sends its feed. Keep it secret, and replace it in the encoder configuration if you reset the key. Set up automatic startup on the VPS
The exact setup depends on the VPS operating system, encoder, command-line arguments, media source, and account setup. The title does not specify those details, so there is no single service file or command that is safe to prescribe for every server. On Linux, systemd is one documented way to run an encoder as a boot-enabled service. A public project demonstrates running FFmpeg under systemd, but treat it as an implementation example—not a universally tested recipe: FFmpeg stream example.

- Identify your setup. Record the VPS distribution and version, encoder (such as FFmpeg or OBS), the exact command or configuration it uses, the intended service user, and where the media and configuration files are stored.
- Use a service manager, not a terminal session. Configure the encoder as a boot-enabled service. Ensure it runs as the intended user, starts in the correct working directory, and can read the media and configuration it needs.
- Configure recovery deliberately. Set the service manager’s restart behavior for the failure modes you expect, such as an encoder crash. A service can recover a process, but it cannot fix a bad encoder command, unavailable media, invalid credentials, or a network path that remains down.
- Protect the stream key. Store credentials where the service can access them without exposing them in public logs, source code, or shared files. Check the configured server URL and key against the current values in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Enable the service at boot and test it. Use the service manager’s controls for your distribution and verify that the encoder starts after a reboot without requiring an interactive login. Check service status and logs; exact commands depend on your system and unit name.
Configure YouTube to accept the restarted feed
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and check the stream configuration and received feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls let you start or stop streaming from the encoder, but they do not launch a stopped VPS process. As YouTube puts it, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” Manage live stream settings.
After the VPS service starts, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status. If you reset the stream key, update the encoder before testing; YouTube notes that the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Troubleshoot a service that starts but does not restore the stream

Account for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one continuous stream lasting beyond 12 hours will be archived in the same way; YouTube’s cited guidance does not fully describe the consequences for longer broadcasts.
