There is no reliable single rupee estimate for running a YouTube 24/7 stream on a Raspberry Pi or spare laptop. Measure each complete setup’s power draw at the wall while it runs the stream you intend to use, then multiply its energy use by your household’s applicable marginal electricity rate. The result is an estimate of energy charges—not necessarily the full amount on your bill.
How to calculate the electricity cost
For a steady average load, use these conversions:
- Daily energy use (kWh) = average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000.
- Annual energy use (kWh) = average watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000, or average watts × 8.76.
- Estimated energy charge = energy use in kWh × your applicable marginal rate in ₹/kWh.
Each watt drawn continuously for a 365-day year amounts to 8.76 kWh. That is a unit conversion based on 8,760 hours in the year, not a measured device result. To estimate cost for a shorter period, multiply the average wall draw by the number of hours, divide by 1,000, then multiply by your rate.

Use the marginal rate that applies to your state, distribution utility and consumption slab. Electricity bills can also include duties and fixed charges; this calculation covers energy charges only and does not estimate those other components. The Central Electricity Authority publishes a tariff and duty compilation, but the effective rate on your own bill depends on your location and usage.

What to measure
Use a plug-in energy meter between the wall outlet and the device’s power supply. Measure the complete setup while it is doing the intended work: streaming the same video content at the same resolution, frame rate and bitrate, using the same network connection and equivalent peripherals. Record average watts or accumulated kWh over a representative period. A short idle reading will not capture the load of encoding and streaming.

- Set up the Raspberry Pi with its actual power supply, network connection, storage, cooling and any attached USB devices.
- Set up the spare laptop as you would leave it during the stream, including its display state, power settings and network connection.
- Run the planned stream for a representative period on each device. Keep content, stream settings and network conditions as similar as practical.
- Record the wall meter’s average watts or kWh, then calculate energy charges using your own tariff.
- Repeat a measurement if the load varies substantially, for example because the laptop’s display or encoding workload changes.
Why published device figures are not enough
Raspberry Pi documentation lists 800 mA typical bare-board active current for Raspberry Pi 5 and recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply. Neither figure is the measured wall draw of a complete livestream setup: the recommended supply rating is not runtime consumption, and peripherals add load. Measure the actual configuration rather than converting the supply rating into an electricity estimate. See Raspberry Pi’s power-supply documentation.
The same Raspberry Pi documentation page includes approximate workload measurements for earlier boards through Pi 4. Those measurements used a monitor, keyboard and mouse, varied network connections by model, and excluded extra USB-device consumption; they are not Pi 5 livestream measurements. A laptop’s draw likewise depends on its model, battery and charging behavior, display state, encoding load and connected devices, so a generic watt figure cannot establish your laptop’s cost.

Can the device sustain the stream YouTube expects?
Power cost matters only if the device can encode and maintain the stream settings you need. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate and codec; for example, H.264 guidance is 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps.
These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not proof that a particular Pi or laptop can encode a chosen stream reliably. Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, use similar audio and movement to the intended content, and monitor stream health. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start.”

| Electricity | Use measured wall draw for the complete Pi setup and your tariff. The 27 W supply recommendation is not consumption. | Use measured wall draw for the laptop in its intended streaming configuration; model and workload affect it. |
| Hardware cost | Include the cost of any Pi, power supply, storage, cooling or peripherals you need to buy. | If already owned, do not count the laptop’s original purchase price as a new cost; consider wear and battery or power behavior separately. |
| Encoding suitability | Confirm through testing that it sustains your selected settings without dropped frames or overheating. | Confirm through testing that it sustains your selected settings; draw and performance depend on the particular laptop and workload. |

YouTube’s encoder streaming setup guidance describes using an encoder for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware and more involved productions. It says initial livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours; its current page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Those platform limits do not certify either device for unattended operation. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; reliability after an outage depends on your power, network, software and recovery setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not leave a Pi or laptop running at home, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams your upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera input. Common questions and problems
The meter shows a different result from a device specification
That is expected when comparing a supply rating, bare-board figure or idle reading with a complete system under load. Check that the meter is measuring the wall input during the intended stream and includes the actual peripherals and power supply.

The stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor stream health
Check the device’s sustained encoding load and temperature, then verify the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, constant bitrate and keyframe interval. Also compare your bitrate with YouTube’s guidance and test whether the upload connection has sufficient headroom. A supported ingestion setting does not guarantee the device can encode it.

The stream does not start after enabling live streaming
Initial livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance. Check the channel’s live-streaming status and allow that activation period before treating the encoder or device as the cause.
The stream stops after power or internet loss
Neither the Pi nor laptop is certified by YouTube for uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Decide how the chosen device and streaming software will restart, verify network recovery, and monitor stream health after an interruption; include that oversight in the practical cost of running the setup.
