Use an authenticated browser context: sign in, save the browser’s authentication state, load that state in the context used for capture, then confirm the protected page has loaded before taking the screenshot. Playwright documents this save-and-restore workflow; Chrome’s headless command-line screenshot flags capture pages but do not, by themselves, provide a complete recipe for restoring a login.
Why headless Chrome can capture a page that requires a login
Headless means the browser runs without a visible user interface; it does not mean the browser is unauthenticated. The page still depends on the site’s cookies, storage, redirects, and any additional login checks. Chrome describes its modern headless and headful modes as sharing Chrome code. Headless mode was updated in Chrome 112; the older Headless implementation has been available as a standalone chrome-headless-shell binary since Chrome 132.0.6793.0. The reliable pattern is to complete an authorized login once, save the resulting browser state, and reuse it when capturing the protected page. Playwright’s storageState supports cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. It does not automatically persist sessionStorage.

Save authentication state and capture the protected page with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in your project before running this example. Replace the sample URL and success signal with ones that match the site and account you are authorized to use. The example uses a post-login URL to confirm authentication, then waits for a dashboard heading before capture.

await captureBrowser.close();This is an adaptable workflow, not a guarantee that every site’s login can be automated the same way. The URL, login action, and heading are examples. Some sites require additional redirects, multifactor authentication, or browser-specific behavior.
Make the readiness checks match the site
- Before saving: wait for a success condition that distinguishes a completed login from a submitted form. A final URL or a signed-in profile control can work, depending on the application.
- Before capture: verify that the protected content is present, not merely that navigation finished. Waiting for a meaningful heading or account element helps avoid capturing a login redirect or a page that is still loading.
- When state expires: sign in again and replace the saved state. Playwright notes that expired authentication state must be refreshed.
Handle sites that rely on sessionStorage
Playwright’s regular storage-state file does not include sessionStorage. If the target application relies on it, capture the relevant values from the authenticated page and inject them for the matching hostname before the page’s own code runs. Playwright documents this workaround in its authentication guide. Do not add this complexity unless the site’s authentication actually depends on session storage.

Keep the authentication file secure
A saved state file can contain cookies and headers that let someone act as the signed-in user. Treat it as a credential: keep it in a dedicated auth directory, restrict access, exclude it from version control, and do not commit it to a public or private repository. Delete or refresh it when the session expires. See Playwright’s authentication guidance.
Choose screenshot scope, size, and timing
Playwright’s screenshot API can save a named image, capture a selected element or the full page, and choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling. Decide on the viewport and capture scope deliberately: a viewport screenshot shows the visible area, while a full-page screenshot includes scrollable content. See Playwright screenshots.

Use a semantic readiness signal where possible instead of relying on a short fixed delay. For time-dependent pages, animations, or content that appears after navigation, wait for the relevant element or state before capturing. Rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; for visual comparisons, use the same environment that produced the baseline. When Chrome’s command line is enough
Chrome can save a screenshot directly when the target page is public or is already accessible through a browser profile with the required session. For example:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/The command-line flags provide screenshot output and viewport dimensions. Chrome also supports --timeout to cap the wait before capture and --virtual-time-budget for time-dependent code. The documented CLI options do not provide a complete authenticated-session save-and-restore workflow, so use Playwright when a repeatable capture must survive a new browser process. - The screenshot shows the login page: confirm the login success condition completed before saving state; check whether the site uses
sessionStorage; make sure the capture context uses the saved state and expected browser engine; then check whether the state expired. - The page redirects to another domain: follow the actual authentication flow and confirm the saved state includes what is needed for the target’s origin. A redirect to a separate identity provider may require additional site-specific handling.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: wait for a meaningful page element rather than assuming that navigation completion means the visible content is ready. Check the target URL and whether the page has loaded the expected content before capture.
- Repeated captures differ: keep the browser version and execution environment consistent. Host OS, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering.
- The authentication file is missing or rejected: verify the path passed to
storageState, ensure the login completed before the file was written, and regenerate the file if the session has expired.
