Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a 1080p YouTube live stream, use the bitrate YouTube recommends for the encoder’s incoming codec and frame rate: 10 Mbps at 30 fps for either H.264 or AV1/H.265, or at 60 fps 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion settings, not a special rate for 24/7 streams or animated backgrounds. The right choice depends on what your encoder actually sends.
Recommended 1080p bitrates by codec and frame rate
YouTube’s live encoder table sets recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. For 1080p, its published minimums and recommendations are:

| Incoming codec | Frame rate | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s published guidance, not a promise of a particular visual result. At 1080p30, the listed recommendation is the same for both codec groupings. At 1080p60, YouTube’s recommended H.264 rate is higher than its AV1/H.265 rate. Choose the row matching the outgoing stream rather than assuming that 1080p alone determines a bitrate. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
What animated backgrounds change—and what they do not
YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate tier for animated backgrounds or for broadcasts that run continuously. The same codec-and-frame-rate table is the starting point. However, the image content still matters in practice: movement and detail affect how an encoder handles the picture, so test with motion similar to the actual background rather than judging from a static frame. YouTube specifically advises including comparable movement in a pre-stream test.

A slowly drifting gradient and a busy scene with fine detail or rapid motion may not look equally clean at the same bitrate. That is a reason to evaluate your own encoded stream, not a basis for inventing a different official bitrate. If the loop is 30 fps, do not choose the 60 fps row simply because the stream is live; match the encoder’s actual output frame rate.
Encoder settings to use
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as listed in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Output 1920 × 1080 at the intended 30 or 60 fps, then use the matching codec row above.
- Protocol and codec: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among its live-streaming options. Confirm your encoder and account workflow support the combination you intend to use.
Use the published minimum only as a lower bound in YouTube’s table; the recommended value is the appropriate initial target when your upload connection and encoder can sustain it. These numbers describe the stream sent to YouTube, not a viewer’s connection speed or the bitrate YouTube later uses for playback.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Set the output format. In your encoder, choose 1080p, the intended frame rate, and the codec you will send. Apply CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Enter the matching bitrate. Use the recommended rate in the table for that codec and frame rate.
- Start a test stream and preview it in YouTube Live Control Room. Include the actual animated loop and audio, if any. YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and checking audio as well as video.
- Watch stream health and messages. YouTube surfaces errors alongside the health indicator and distinguishes critical from moderate issues. Investigate a health warning before relying on the setup for a long run.
- Check the full playback path. Confirm the picture remains stable, the loop behaves as intended, and audio is not unintentionally silent, clipped or out of sync. Repeat after changing codec, frame rate, bitrate or network conditions.
Lower latency is a separate choice from bitrate. YouTube notes that lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering, so select latency based on whether immediate interaction matters for your stream; it does not replace choosing the correct bitrate row. YouTube’s general live-stream settings guidance.
Bitrate alone cannot make a 24/7 stream reliable
The bitrate table addresses video ingestion, not unattended uptime. A continuous stream also depends on the encoder staying available, the computer and power remaining on, a stable upload connection, and a plan for recovering if YouTube or the encoder disconnects. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish a complete setup that guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

For a locally encoded stream, test the real computer, network and recovery process—not just a short ideal-condition preview. Monitor the stream’s health and be prepared to respond to warnings or a dropped connection. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but its guidance does not say that such hardware is required for a looping animated background.
