For a stereo YouTube Live stream of Indian classical music, set audio to 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz, using AAC or MP3 and constant bitrate (CBR). That is YouTube’s general live-encoder recommendation—not a special setting for Indian classical music, India, or 24/7 broadcasts. Set video bitrate separately according to your video codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Recommended audio settings for a stereo stream
| Setting | Use |
|---|---|
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Bitrate mode | CBR (constant bitrate) |
These are YouTube’s published settings for stereo audio. They are platform configuration recommendations, not the result of a listening test comparing bitrates for sitar, tabla, vocals, or other Indian classical instruments. YouTube also transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers, so a higher input audio bitrate is not a guaranteed way to improve what they hear. Does Indian classical music need a higher bitrate?
YouTube’s published guidance does not specify a different audio bitrate for Indian classical music, Indian channels, or a broadcast running continuously. Use 128 Kbps for stereo as the general platform recommendation; do not treat it as a genre-specific guarantee or assume that raising the bitrate will improve the delivered sound.

For 5.1 surround, YouTube lists 384 Kbps and 48 kHz. That is a separate format, not an upgrade required for a stereo music stream. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports 5.1 only with AAC.

Keep audio and video bitrate separate
The audio figure is not the total stream bitrate. Choose video settings independently, based on the video codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations differ across H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, so an H.264 number should not be treated as a universal requirement. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/60 fps; both figures are video bitrate recommendations, not audio settings.
A music stream with static artwork may not need the same video profile as a stream with frequent motion, but YouTube does not publish a special bitrate table for still-image or music-only broadcasts. Select a supported resolution and frame rate your encoder can produce reliably, and ensure your sustained upload capacity can carry the chosen stream. YouTube recommends testing the connection and selecting settings that support a reliable broadcast.

Encoder and stream settings to check
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP.
- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Rate control: Use CBR as the listed bitrate encoding recommendation.
- Compatibility: Confirm your encoder supports the selected protocol and audio/video codec combination.
These are YouTube’s published encoder settings; the exact controls and labels depend on the encoder you use. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and the YouTube Live Streaming API liveStreams reference.

Test before leaving a stream running
- Configure the encoder with the intended audio format, bitrate, sample rate, video profile, and keyframe interval.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test using audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing representative audio and movement.
- Check that the audio is present and that the video looks and moves as expected. Confirm the encoder is using the settings you intended.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and any messages during the test and broadcast. If health warnings appear, check the encoder output and whether the connection can sustain the selected settings.
Rights matter for a continuous music broadcast
The encoder recommendations do not determine whether you have permission to broadcast a particular performance or recording, or to keep an archived stream available. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the specific composition and recording before streaming. A stream’s technical settings do not resolve copyright or reused-content questions.
