To make a thumbnail of a page that requires a login, open it in an authenticated browser, confirm the login succeeded, navigate to the protected page, and capture its rendered content. A public screenshot request cannot show content behind an account sign-in. For a repeatable workflow, Playwright can save and reload supported browser authentication state; protect that state like a password.
What you need before capturing a protected page
- An account authorized to view the page and an automated access method permitted by the site.
- A browser automation context that can complete the site’s normal login flow.
- A clear success signal, such as a signed-in control or the expected destination page, so the script does not mistake the login screen for the thumbnail.
This is a browser-rendering task: the browser must load the page with the account’s authenticated state before it can capture the page image. Playwright’s documentation covers authenticated browser state and screenshots.

Make a one-time thumbnail with Playwright
The example below uses a normal login form. Replace the example URLs and selectors with those for the site you are authorized to use. Keep credentials in environment variables rather than placing them in source code.
Install Playwright

Run the capture
Save this as thumbnail.mjs and run it with node thumbnail.mjs. Update the form selectors and the signed-in success selector for the target site; sites using single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, or a different login flow may require their own permitted interaction steps.

Reuse authentication for recurring thumbnails
For repeated captures, Playwright can save browser state after login and load it into a later context. The documented state may include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkeys, depending on the application and the state captured. Confirm what the target site’s authentication actually uses; a saved state is not guaranteed to cover every login mechanism.

Save a state file after a successful login
After the script has confirmed the signed-in success signal, add:

If the site relies on session storage, follow that guidance rather than assuming the state file contains it.
Protect and refresh the state
A saved authentication file may contain cookies or headers that let someone act as the account. Store it with restricted access, exclude it from source control, and refresh it when the session expires. Do not commit it to a repository.

Choose the right screenshot for a thumbnail
- Viewport: captures only the visible browser screen and is often the better fit when the thumbnail should show the page’s initial view.
- Full page: includes content below the fold. It can be useful when the page’s important content extends beyond the initial screen, but may make a thumbnail less legible when scaled down.
Use a deliberate viewport size so repeated captures have consistent framing. Wait for a dependable page-specific signal before capture; a fixed delay alone can finish too early on slow pages or waste time on fast ones.
Troubleshooting login-protected captures
The image shows the login page
Check that the login action completed and that the expected signed-in indicator appeared before navigating. Then check the final URL after visiting the protected page. If it redirects to login, the session may not have persisted or the site may require another authentication step.

The script times out waiting for the success signal
Verify that the selector matches the actual signed-in interface and is visible after login. Sites may show a consent prompt, an intermediate redirect, or a multi-factor challenge instead; handle the site’s ordinary flow only where automated access is allowed.
A saved state works once and then stops
Authentication state can expire or be revoked. Log in again through the authorized flow, save a fresh state file, and keep it protected. If the application depends on session storage, use Playwright’s documented separate initialization approach.
The page loads but appears incomplete
Wait for a meaningful element on the protected page rather than relying only on navigation completion. If the content is below the fold, choose a full-page capture; if it is loaded dynamically, identify a page-specific condition that signals it is ready.
