These habits can prevent avoidable damage, but they cannot stop the normal chemical aging that gradually reduces battery capacity.
1. Leaving earbuds in excessive heat
Heat is a documented battery concern. Apple says AirPods should be used at ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C (32°F and 95°F) and stored between -10°C and 45°C (14°F and 113°F). These are AirPods-specific operating and storage ranges, not universal limits for all earbuds. Apple warns that very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life, including when AirPods are left in a hot car or in prolonged direct sunlight. Very cold conditions can temporarily reduce AirPods’ runtime; Apple says battery life returns to normal after they warm up. Check your own manufacturer’s instructions for the safe temperature range for your earbuds and charging case.

Dry earbuds and their charging contacts before putting them away or charging them. Samsung warns that sweat or moisture on Galaxy Buds charging terminals can cause corrosion, and says the connection must be completely dry before charging. Sony likewise advises removing water, moisture, or dirt and letting its equipment dry fully at room temperature before charging. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds charging precautions and Sony’s charging cautions give brand-specific instructions.

Water resistance is not permission to get every part wet. Sony lists rain, wet hands, perspiration, spills, humidity, and condensation as possible sources of water damage. Repeated small exposures can corrode internal components over time, and charging terminals can corrode. The earbuds and case may have different moisture limits, so check the guidance for your exact model rather than assuming that a water-resistant earbud makes its case water-resistant too. Sony’s water-damage guidance was modified January 19, 2026.
3. Scrubbing mesh or contacts with the wrong tools
Earbud mesh and charging contacts are delicate. Metal or wire brushes can damage earbuds, Samsung warns. Debris on ear tips or mesh can also reduce audio quality, so cleaning is useful—but use only the method recommended for your model.

For specified Galaxy Buds surfaces, Samsung recommends a cotton swab and dry brush. That instruction is not automatically suitable for other brands or models; consult your product’s care guide before cleaning the mesh or contacts. A soft brush and cotton swabs may be useful where the manufacturer recommends them, but a cleaning kit is not required. Samsung’s Galaxy earbuds cleaning instructions explain its model-family guidance.
4. Treating battery aging as something care can eliminate
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity as they chemically age. Apple says chemical age depends on factors including temperature history and charging pattern, so careful use cannot guarantee a particular lifespan or prevent all runtime loss. The practical takeaway for earbuds is to avoid documented hazards such as excessive heat and follow the manufacturer’s charging and care instructions. Some familiar battery advice is device-specific. Apple’s recommendation to keep a device half charged for long-term storage appears in iPhone guidance, not as a universal AirPods or earbud instruction. Follow the guidance for your own earbuds instead of applying phone advice by default. Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance covers that storage advice.

Do not charge earbuds with wet contacts, and do not use damaged cables or chargers. Apple warns that moisture during charging and damaged charging equipment can cause damage and safety hazards. Use charging equipment that the manufacturer says is compatible with your model; do not assume a generic replacement is suitable. What not to assume about charging overnight
The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that leaving all wireless earbuds charging overnight will ruin them, or that every full charge or deep discharge damages every model. Apple’s overnight-charging advice in the reviewed material is for iPhone, not earbuds. Use the charging guidance for your specific model, and focus on the better-established precautions: avoid excessive heat, keep charging connections dry, and use safe, compatible equipment.
